atypical cyst in left ovary, polyp in uterus

by mwig, Apr 14, 2007 12:00AM
I am 37 year old woman, with 2 children. I have been on the pill for almost 20 years, with no side effects - I originally went on to regulate my very irregular periods. I recently went off the pill because it seems to me I am entering a high risk category. Over the 6 or so months off the pill, my periods were very heavy, and pms symptoms were continual (very tender/sore breasts, crampiness, lower back pain). I went to my gp who put me back on the pill and scheduled an pelvic ultrasound, which revealed a atypical cyst in my left ovary - scheduled a followup ultrasound for a couple of months later during which time on the pill, my pms symptom decreased, but did not totally disappear (breast tenderness pretty much gone, crampiness & lower back pain comes and goes). Followup ultrasound revealed cyst has not changed in my ovary and also found a polyp in my uterus. I am scheduling an appointment with a obgyn. My doctor says she is not worried about the polyp, but wants to figure out whats up with my ovary - thinks it could be a dermoid cyst or blood sac...what questions do I want to ask at this point? how pushy should I be about getting this taken care of ASAP? Basically, what will I be faced with for choices and what do I need to do/know to be informed properly?
I know this is lengthy. Thanks for your time, Mara

Dear Mara,

You have had a great evaluation. If the cyst seems unusual, the ob gyn may recommend to remove it. S/he may also recommend a D&C to remove the polyp at the same time. I think an appointment and evaluation within a few months is reasonable.
take care
