CA-125

by Trace68, Feb 10, 2005 12:00AM
My mother has just completed her 6th course of chemo after getting ovarian cancer at age 57. She had to have her splen removed, part of her stomach, pancreas and small intestine, colon, half her large intestine, and her ovaries. two in-operable tumours where left - which have now been treated with chemo.

I'm 36 (with 3 children) and as a precaution, I have had the CA125 test performed. the test came back abnormal with a reading of 31. A second test was performed 3 weeks later - which had a reading of 65! I'm now due to have another test in two weeks time.

My family history of cancer on both sides is not good, with all grandparents dying of cancer - from ovarian, bowel, and lung. I also had half my thyroid removed in june 2004, as it had died and there was a coloid cyst  (which can turn cancerous) 3x2.5cm.

Should I be concerned, re my CA125 test??

You should be concerned in the sense of getting your follow-up tests, and seeking the advice of another doctor if you ever feel that your doctor is not approaching your situation in a serious manner.  However, many things can elevate CA-125 levels, and you must consider that in the past year you have suffered the emotional strain of a parent with cancer, a partial thyroidectomy, and a cyst in addition to any other possible conditions you might have, like infections or endometriosis.

Given your family history of cancers, I believe that I would seek an appointment with a cancer specialist if  you do not already have one.  A gynocological oncologist might have a better perspective on tests or any possible preventive measures.

Thank you for your comment, I will wait until the next CA-125 test to see the results, and then progress in the appropriate (medical) direction. Again, thank you. I will keep you posted.
