11 year old with mass on ovary

by lil sunshine, Mar 25, 2005 12:00AM
My daughter went in for a kidney US and they found her left kidney to be blocked and explored further and found a 8x7x5cm{I think those are the dimensions} mass on her left ovary. We meet again with the GYN ONC on Apr 5th to discuss surgery and options. She also has a psuedotumor cerebri due to hydrocephalus {and a brain malformation}in her brain and they are saying a possible glioma not showing up on MRI . She started puberty at age 7 and monthly periods at 10 .She is having her kidney surgery in the summer as they want to give her body time to heal.

They are calling it a dermoid cyst or tertama maybe beign or malignat. I asked my Oncolgist{I had a bone tumor} about her negative tumor markers and he said it really wasn't conclusive for all tumors. He feels that the only choice the drs have is to biopsy to make sure it's not cancer. I know I will only feel good about this. She has lost 20 lbs in a year and is nauseous all the time. At 1st the thought was it was from her spinal tap but it has persisted for over a year so we know it's not that.Thank God her neurologist ordered the US!

Yes, I rate the ultrasound as one of the medical world's greatest inventions.  It is wonderful that we can "see" inside the body, without resorting to difficult, painful, and dangerous exploratory surgeries as was done in the past.  It is unfortunate that a biopsy is the only way to determine if the mass is benign or malignant;  I know because I have 'been there and done that' routine myself.    I hope that all goes well for your daughter, with the mass and with her kidney surgery.

Thanks, it's just bad that we have to wait til the 8th for her surgery. What's really bad is my family all seem to think that surgery for this is nothing to worry about. My mother and even my sister all seem to not care about this. I feel like screaming at them! If this were their daughter I would be praying and crying for her.I know that the odds are inMy daughter's favor but still surgery is not fun either, I've had 5 for my leg and I know how hard they can be.

We can only pray for a good outcome and at least I have friends who are here for me. Her teachers are giving her support too.

I WILL PRAY FOR YOUR DAUGHTER. MY DAUGHTER IS HAVING SURGERY ON 3/29 SHE IS 15 DIAGNOSED WITH POLYCYSTIC OVARIES AND BY CHANCE FOUND A BIG CYST 8CM, WHICH WILL BE REMOVED THEN AND PRAY THAT IT IS BENIGN.

WE WILL KEEP YOU IN OUR PRAYERS

Thank you NicJam, I will pray for your daughter also. It is an awful thing for such young girls to endure.

Oh,  I am so sorry to read that that those family members who should be  your 'primary emotional support system' are not taking this situation very seriously.  To quote my own doctor, "There is no such thing as minor surgery; all surgery is major surgery."   I actually think that all of this is harder for you as a parent than it is for your daughter; you have the  knowledge of all possible consequences, yet you still have to be brave and hide your concerns so that you do not needlessly frighten your daughter.  Yes, you do have my prayers as well.  It is obvious from your post that your daughter is dealing with a list of health issues that have come upon her all at once, and you both need divine intervention to give you the strength to meet each new step along the way.

NicJam How did your daughters sugery fare?I hope she is well. Was her cyst benign? I am so scared for our girls! I think it's horrible for these girls so young to go thru this.
