What to do next to get to the bottom of things?

by 2Pom, Jan 18, 2006 12:00AM
History is I started last January time frame with pressure on my bladder and some bloating. I went to my OBGYN and he ordered a TVU and pelvic ultrasound along with kidney ultrasound.

Ultrasounds came back clear, uterus correct position/size, no cysts or growths on ovaries, nothing with kidneys.

Sent to a urologist, had cystoscopy, had determinded spastic bladder and overactive bladder. Given Detrol and taken for a month. Problem went away. Recently started with bloating and pelvic fullness/pressure, spastic bladder symptoms. Been to the OBGYN and Urologist who both think I have IBS. I have a return appt with OBGYN on Feb 3. I am thinking I will order a CAT scan. Any other ideas on what to ask for. He will not do a CA125. He says he is positive it isnt OC but how can he be so sure. He doesnt feel anything when doing an internal and the US was clear.

Hi,

I have no idea what to suggest.  It sounds frustrating though.  IBS sounds like an easy out in this case, so I hope you find some more ways to look into this.  The CA125 isn't very useful anyway since it misses 1/2 the cancers and picks up on other benign stuff like cysts.  CAT sounds like a great idea.

Pressure on bladder and spastic bladder aren't part of IBS as far as I know.  Bloating can be, but there should be diarrea, and/or constipation.

Maybe try a different obgyn or a gastroendo.

Come to think of it, I had a bladder infection once that cleared up with bactrim, but bladder discomfort and a mylaise lasted three months.  Meanwhile tried more bactrim, then had cystoscopy which showed inflamation and not much else.  It was effecting my work.  I felt better when I rested so I finally pretended I had the flu and went to bed.  Three days into that I started running 102 fever and then gradually got better over the next week and knew I had rounded a corner.  Here's the interesting part...  over the next year had several more but more minor infections and noticed that each time I took bactrim I got deep itching, tight sort-of throat, and little white pimples and ran a mylaise fever for a month and a half.  Each time I took some other antibiotic I was fine in three days.  Over more time and other illnesses, it's become clear that I am allergic to Bactrim and a few other antibiotics with this reaction.  At the time doctors told me I was imaging it all, but over time I did figure it out and now get believed.  So, maybe there is something in your environment or medications or vitamins or food that you tried or changed that has something to do with it?  It's a long shot but worth a mention.  In particular for spastic bladder a food (that was fine before) may be hugely contributing to it.

Good luck!

Find a doctor who will do a CA125 blood test for you.  That test, which many doctors say is not reliable, has told me two times when I had ovarian cancer.
