hypoechoic lesion attenuates sound beam, ovarian cancer?

by What Next?, Aug 31, 2003 12:00AM
I'm 44 & had breast cancer 4 yrs ago, on tamoxifen for 2. Had sonograms past 2 yrs checking on complex cyst that remains the same size in right ovary. Last sonogram now refers to it as hypoechoic lesion with peripheral hyperechoic rim. Notes that it's larger than previous exams 17x11x14mm (50% larger), is somewhat different in characteristic in that it attenuates to sound beam. Radiologist recommends close monitoring to exclude developing ovarian magligancy. Oncologist recommends laparoscopy to take biopsy but gynocologist said no, doubts it's cancer, said just remove everything or check again in 2 mths. Since he doesn't want to do the lap. my oncologist is going to try & get a pet scan but warns it still isn't 100% accurate like a biopsy. I'm still waiting on my CA125 results. What should I do if pet scan comes out normal or even if I can't get the scan? Should I insist on a laparoscopy or have the right ovary removed? Does this sound like cancer? It does to me, only because when I felt the lump in my breast 4 yrs. ago the mamo & sono showed an enlarged lymph node and I should come back in 3 months. I insisted on a biopsy and it turned out to be invasive intraductal carcinoma, two foci, about .6cm each, histology grade III, nuclear grade-intermediate and when removed margins were close 1mm at lateral margins. What does the sonogram mean, does it sound like cancer and did it come from the breast cancer, what should or shouldn't be done. I also have a cyst on my left kidney for past 2 yrs, should that be anything to worry about?  Please give me your opinions.  Thank you.
