Complex ovarian cyst

I'm 45 years old and in January 2006 I was found to have a right hemorrhagic cyst and follow-up was suggested.  My cycles are irregular so my GYN said to have a repeat in 2 months.  At my two month sono they are now classifying the cyst as complex (partially cystic/solid)and it doubled in size.  The Radiologist stated in the report that it was suspicious for an ovarian neoplasm.  I had a Ca-125 level which came back as 10 and a CT scan of the abdomen/pelvis which was negative except that I have a right ovarian cyst.  My GYN said that since the Ca-125 level is normal and the CT scan is normal he said I could go on BCP pills for six weeks straight to see if it shrinks.  After six weeks he wants me to have another sono to see if the cyst got smaller.  I'm really concerned because I'm having symptoms of achiness, fullness in my abdomen and sharp pains that come and go.  I'm also concerned that this cyst may be cancerous even though I've had a history of ovarian cysts for the past two years due to irregular periods.  The cyst in January measured 2.6 x 2.5 x 2.4 and now it measures 4.5 x 2.8 x 4.1.  I'm not even sure if that is a big cyst?  I would appreciate any advice that this forum can give me in how to proceed with this.  Should I see a GYN Oncologist?  Should I wait and see or should I really consider surgery?  I'm very perplexed on how to proceed.  Thanks for all your help in this matter. Anna

ARad, I was not trying to scare you when I was suggesting getting the best information you can.  Only you know your own body, and when it isn't feeling right.  This is the Ovarian Cancer forum, and there is a reason that Ovarian Cancer is called the silent killer...it sneaks up, and so often, women do not get the correct diagnosis quick enough...time lapses and then...if it is cancer (we pray it is not), after all the time in between dr appts and test, x-rays, and scans...it may be at Stage III or Stage IV.  I am only trying to help others so they can protect themselves.  I am totally aware of how bad it is;  I am living with it.  If you get on websites such as ovariancancer.org or americancancersociety.com  you will find out these important suggestions...for the various symptoms.  I look at my own life as it is better to be safe...than sorry (or too late).  Arad, I pray things get answered soon for you, and also, that it is not cancer.  Please know I had no intention of trying to scare you, only help you get the info you really need to get. God bless you.

Thanks everyone for making me feel so comfortable in this forum.  I really like reading all the posts because it has alleviated some of my fears.  It's nice to know other people going through the same thing. I appreciate everyones advice.  I am actually going to see my GYN tomorrow because of my ongoing symptoms and the need to move this along.  I will let you know what happens. Is there anything you would ask your GYN before deciding on surgery?  I do know that he did tell me that if I have the surgery he will have a GYN Onc. on standby just in case the frozen section comes back positive for malignancy.  My GYN is very thorough and has discussed my case with a few Radiologists who did prior sonos on me as well as the Radiologist who read my CT scan.  They all feel that it's not malignant and that is why they took the wait and see approach.  I'm the one that is more anxious and I feel that my symptoms are now exacerbated because I want this all over and waiting six weeks to find out that I still need surgery is not an option for me.  That's why I'm going to see my GYN to see if the cyst did get any bigger and if he still recommends to remove it.  Thanks again for all your advice and I'll keep you posted as to what route I take.  Anna

Most certainly see an gynocological/oncologist.....YES!  It is their specialty, it is all they do, they will find out for sure.  Do NOT waste time, Ovarian Cancer is the silent killer.  Trust me, since last August I have lost some friends in my cancer support group to it.  I myself, have Stage III.  I cannot emphasize it enough:  call immediately;  get an appointment with a gynocologist/oncologist.  I feel for you.

Hi, welcome to the site.  Just 2 things first "neoplasm" is just a fancy word for new cell growth", 2nd: 99% of ovarian cysts are benign.  As for your symptoms, they are all typical of ovarian cysts.  Some drs. do take the watch and wait route.  I think you should go to a gyn/onc for a 2nd opinion - only because they are specialists in this area as sometimes your regular gyn just doesn't see this too often.  Also, 2nd opinions never hurt!!  You are in my thoughts and prayers.  Godspeed
