first time here surgery date confirmed

hi everyone...I am 39 and mom to two boys.  went to gyno last week and she found a mass..sent me for ultrasound and and still is unsure if it is a fibroid or ovarian cyst..but she is leaning towards cyst.  it is 10 cm x 10 cm. So now she wants to do surgery and says if it is a fibroid than she will take the uterus out..if it is an ovarian cyst the ovary will come out. She is going to have oncology team in the O.R. and if the cyst is malignant than she will do a full hysterecotomy. So I wont know what happens till i wake up. She made an appointment for me to go and see an oncologist before the surgery. Does all this sound like standard procedure? She also said she didnt think it was cancer because when they did the ultrasound they "threw" color into it and it didnt show. They said that most time with cancer it would light up like a neon sign. She said the oncology standby in the or is just a precaution. Thanks girls..great site!

The color thing with the ultrasound I guess shows blood, there is going to be some but there shouldn't be standing or pooling blood..i think this is what she said. Also it may show fluid on the belly which i didnt have, and is not a good sign my dr said.
I don't think my doc is too worried they have schedualed my surgery for june 6, everyone says if she was really concerned she would have done it a lot sooner. so i guess thats good! She didn't give me an option for scope, said mass was way too big so only an incision would do, oh well already have a c-section scar! Good luck ladies!

Im just scared because she said she really doesnt think its cancer..she just wants oncology there for precautions..i wasn't sure if this normal or what..

hi, i just went through something similar. My gyn insisted on a gyn/onc there due to my history, my symptoms and various test results. I think you are good hands, I believe having the experts there is the best you can do for yourself. Best to you.

Dawn, you sound like you have a good GYN...I like that she went right ahead and got a team to be there just in case.  My GYN said "that wasn't needed"...really?  It's needed.  Just in case.  Sounds like you're in good hands!

Question for anyone...do GYN/ONC have regular practices?  I was curious about this because I'm once again on the hunt for a new GYN and wouldn't it be so nice to already have a GYN/ONC for your doc?  I just have no idea if they only see patients already diagnosed with cancer though.  Thanks!  Tia

Hi, I had a very similar situation, I had cysts/masses on both ovaries, my regular gyn was all prepared to do the surgery, but my ca 125 was elevated. She referred me to a gyn/onc because she did not feel comfortable doing the surg. he went over every possibility with me, and every scenario. I consented to a number of things all dependent on what he would find. Well, first thank heaven it was not cancer. The ovaries both had to be removed, and  he also did a complete hysterectomy. I am 44 with 3 young boys, so I was fine with whatever he felt he should do. I completely trusted him. Be glad that they are having the assistance of a gyn/onc. I am 3 weeks post op now and feel really good. The waiting game is the toughest part, keep busy! Best wishes to you, Shari

No I haven't contacted them...but I am having surgery tomorrow and as luck would have it I have some nurses that are friends who work there and I will try to find out through them.  I find nurses the most reliable source for a good doctor...seems they have the inside info on most.  Thanks for the info, I'm thinking I might rather have that type of GYN...can't hurt!

Is it typical to "throw color on it?"  I just had a TVUS and regular stomach US that showed what they think is a dermoid tumor.  Doc ordered an MRI and bloodwork to see if it was benign or not.  I read how those can help determine, but if the probe was still uh... in me, wonder why he didn't go ahead and throw some color on it just in case?  Should I ask him this when I see him on Friday to discuss my MRI?

I think it is great that your doctor is having the oncologist in the or.  They are specially trained, and will know what to do if they do find cancer.  I will be praying for you.  Kasie

I am glad that you are getting the 2nd opinion from a gyn/onc.  They are specialists and very knowledgable.  Just remember that 99% of ovarian cysts are benign.  This does not mean that you should ignore your symptoms.  You are doing the right thing.  You are in my thoughts and prayers.  Godspeed
