bilateral complex adnexal masses

I have been suffering a great amount of pain in my lower back, bloating, fullness and discomfort. I was sent to have a pelvic scan and transvaginal ultrasound. Ca125 was also ordered.
I struggle in getting the results. My ob gyn office was always busy and it was so hard to get an appointment.  I got so upset on the phone and insisted for my gynocologist to call me with the results.  the results are the following: There are bilateral complex masses in both adnexal regioans.  The abnormality on the right in total measures 9.3x4.0x4.2 cm.  The abnormality is characterized by at least three of four hypoechoic but not simply cystic components. ) I still have no clarification of what this means)???
The abnormality on the left in total measures 6.1x5.8x4.6cm. m The abnormality in the left ovary also consists of several hypoechoic,(what does this word mean?), non simply cystic masses.
The doctor said that a bilateral ovarian neoplasm is a possibility but would be quite unlikely.  Complex ovarian cysts ones with hemorrhage (what does this mean)and or infection, are a possibility. Enndometrosis is also a possibility as well.  But he I would need a second opinion. Now it has been over a week and I have not heard nothing from his office.  I have contacted the officre numerous of times and they have not been able to set me up with the specialist. I have good insurance so I know that is not a problem.  I am at a point where I am truly frustrated because I do not how critical my sitution is. Should I be worrying about my situation being malignant? Or can i be overeacting? Help!

I finally went to see the Gyno oncologist today and it looks like because of the size I will be going in for surgery. I was so nervous then that I didn't ask questions like how long is the surgery. What are my chances of me loosing my ovaries.  Has anyone been through the surgery and can you tell me the process?

Thanks Elaine,

As a matter of fact I started making some phone calls and was able to set up an appointment for a second opinion with a Gyno oncologist. Finally!! My appointment is tomorrow June 7th.
Hopefully, everything will come out well

Dear Mysil,

I'm so sorry to hear of your experience and the obvious fustration it is causing you. My suggestion is that you should definitely see another doc, preferrably a specialist, a Gynecologic Oncologist. If it is cancer, you will be with a specialist who knows what to do. I would not stay with this current doc if you are not getting the attention you deserve.

Someone else mentioned getting a referral and she is right, you will mostly likely need one. This is what I did: I found the doc I wanted and I wrote a letter to my current doc stating that I am requesting a referral for a second opinion with a gynecologic oncologist (a specialist) and would like a copy of ALL my medical records, scans and diagnostic reports sent to DR. FIRST NAME, LAST NAME. In the letter, you should have the contact information of the doc you want to see. In the meantime, make the appointment with the specialist and explain to them your situation (you want a second opinion) and that you have written a letter stating your request to this first doctor. They might have suggestions on what else you can put in the letter.

My experience has been that once you formally write a letter of request its now documented proof. While your at it, ALWAYS get a copy of your scans and diagnositic reports for your own file (write a separate letter requesting this). I would also suggesting walking into the doctors office personally and hand delivering it (if possible). That way you explain to them the urgency and how unhappy you are that they are givng you the "run around".

My mother had the same discription on her diagnositc report: bilateral complex adnexal masses (part cystic/part solid). The report said that this neoplasm (abnormal growth) was highly suggestive of ovarian cancer. It turned out being a benign dermoid cyst. I am praying that your adnexal masses are also benign. You have a good chance of them being benign so try to think positive.

Please know that I am sending you positive energy and prayers!

Aloha no,
Elaine from Hawaii

Most gyn offices don't require you to have a referral, so what I did was find an office with a gyn/onc on staff, and make an appointment to have the cyst looked at. Then she sent me to the higher-up person in that office, and there you go.... I had sx to remove my endo and chocolate cyst.
The really special specialists that are in private practice may require referrals, but offices that do it all do not. If your doc won't help you out, I'd say get some referrals, look online and in the phone book, and go get the treatment you deserve.
Hang in there...

You have good reason to be concerned...don't be put off by your current physician....sounds to me like he simply doesn't know what to do at this point....you need to be seen by a gyn/oncologist.....YOU HAVE ONLY ONE CHANCE TO GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME....SEE A GYN/ONCOLOGIST....that is who should do your surgery as well. If your doc won't refer you make an appointment yourself.....insist your chart be forwarded to the gyn/onc.....I simply went and picked up a copy of my file.....note the "my file".....it does belong to you....don't give up...you are on the right path...I had to push just as you are doing and I am so glad I was such a pain to my gyn....he now takes credit for finding my cancer at such an early stage.....agghhhh...hang in there...keep pushing and keep us posted.
Peace.

Well, there you go.  I just found out yesterday from new gyn,onc that the second ultrasound revealed that the "thing" had gone down from 12cm to 8cm.No one told me that before.  ANd that was only a ten day difference from one test to the other.   Still good size but you have to really push. I got tired talking to the "bloodpressuretakerers" as I call the little helpers.  I wanted to talk to my doctor and insisted.  INSIST.  It is your body.

This new GYN/ONC very eager to work with me and answer questions.  Even agreed at my suggestion that I do another vaginal ultrasound so see the status of the thing.  Maybe getting smaller. I pray.

So I will be thinking of you.  Take charge.  DOn't back down until you get answers. And don't let the bloodpressuretakererweighttakerer be the one to answer them. Talk to the DOCTOR and if he won't then get a new one posthaste!
