What are the risks?

My mother is 50 years old and has been diagnosed with an ovarian cyst.  This is not a complete suprise...her gyno has been watching this for several months, but did not deam it necessary to remove it just then.  No one in our family has ever had ovarian cancer.  Her latest ultrasound showed that the cyst did not grow in size but is now septated.  She is scheduled for a hysterectomy the day after Christmas.  My concern is her post menopausal status and the fact that her cyst is not a functional one.  Her gyno set the date for her surgery a little over a month from her last ultra sound...why so long?  If it has just progressed into a complex cyst, why wait 4 weeks to do the surgery?  If her cystic mass is malignat, would it be safe to say that it has been caught early enough for a good recovery? Is it merely a safety precaution to have a gyno-oncologist there for her surgery in case of malignancy or do they suspect something? I've read a tremendous amount on the subject only to add confusion and  worry.  I understand nothing is for certain, but I would like to hear a response from a real person specific to these questions.   Thanks!
