Ovarian cancer and HRT?

I was wondering how many of you who have/had OV cancer are using HRT?  My GYN put me on a estradiol patch right after my surgery and didnt seem to think anything of it then I started reading the literature in the box and it said could cause ov cancer?? well I'm thinking isnt that like a person with lung cancer who still smokes? So I asked my oncologist who is a younger doc and he said he'd check into it and came back and said I shouldnt be on any kind of estrogen cause it could increase my chances of the cancer coming back.  So I'm not on anything now. Its not too bad...just some hot flashes but they dont really bother me.  I'm more worried about bone loss from no estrogen at such a young age (I'm 37). Thanks

Kimberly

Oh, this is an area I've been at odds with my Dr on for a while. I'm 27yrs old and of course, they put me on Premarin as soon as I had my first hot flash. I didn't really think much of it, but I also had no idea I was going to have cancer and a  hysterectomy, so my mind was so cluttered with everything else, I never thought to ask about it. The more I read, the more I don't like the idea of it. Normally, (and I say that in a very general way) Ovarian Tumors tend to not be estrogen driven, especially epithilial tumors. I have Micropapillary Serous Carcinoma (a low grade cancerous tumor, but stage 3c) and these have the tendency to be estrogen positive. If the option is still open, you should request to have your tumors tested for estrogen receptors. I have a request into the pathology department at my hospital where I had my surgery, and I haven't heard back. I think I could handle the hot flashes and stuff, but seeing as my mother just got diagnosed with osteoperosis, I have serious concerns about that as well. I think the correlation between HRT and Ovarian Cancer, is if you have never been diagnosed and you take it for 10yrs or longer, than you increase your chances of being diagnosed with it. I'm not sure how that relates to someone who already had Ov/Ca. There's not much out there either on the subject, as I think that many of the women who get OV/CA are post-menopausal and don't need to worry about Estrogen replacement. (I think I read somewhere that the average age is 56, but don't quote me on that!) I hope this helps, and don't stop pushing until you feel comfortable with your decision. Ask your DR about having your slides tested for estrogen receptors and see what he has to say.
Take care,
Becky

I was diagnosised with low grade, 1A and was allowed to be on HRT, but, that was short lived because I developed ovarian remnant cysts.  They believe that these have fed off of the estrogen.  Believe it or not I have also been told that I cannot take OTC soy type replacements as they mimic estrogen.

Please discuss the use of HRT in depth with your GYN/ONC.  These guys and gals are the specialists.

Believe it your not, I found that taking 800IUs a day of "natural" vitamin helps lessen the hot flashes.

well my cancer was something like a papillary serous. I am defintiely going to ask my oncologist next week if its estrogen driven. I"m in a smaller town so I have a regular gyn/ob and regular oncologist. No gyn onc around here. So I try to research and work between the 2 of them.  thanks
