Clueless Doctor?

So I've posted a couple of times but just to recap.  My last normal menstrual cycle was in June of this year. I started having intense constant abdominal pain the beginning of August.  Mid August I had an u/s done which stated that my left ovary was slightly enlarged and had 2 small simple cysts-(1) 1.9cm & (2)1.4cm-My gyn doctor indicated that these cysts were not large enough to cause my pain and sent me to GI doc. GI doc sent me back to GYN doc indicating it was not GI related. Other symptoms include: nauseau, not able to stay asleep at night, low appetite, back pain - constant left sided cramps and forget about sex -- the pelvic exam yesterday put me in tears.  I have done the 10 day tx of progesterone to "kick-start" my cycle-nothing happened. They gyn doc stated that she believes it is endometrosis but when I asked her if that would halt my cycles she indicated that is a seperate issue and that it didn't matter if I wasn't ovulating unless I was trying to get pregnant! I'm 34 yrs old and have always been regular until now! I asked her if constant pain was normal for endometrosis she said "no-it's not typical". She wants to do laproscopic surgery to confirm the diagnosis but I asked her if she would be able to tell if anything was wrong with the ovaries when she was in there and she said "like what? I've already told you this is not related to your cyst" I'm considering putting off the surgery because I'm afraid she will go in--see some endometrosis say yep that's it and not look at anything else.  My hubby wants me to get a 2nd opinion - suggestions? I'm so frustrated

I am with you Gail, I feel that the insurance co. would save more money if they would give less strictions and allow specialist to be able to look at a patient without a referal or diagnoised with cancer...by then it may be too late if the gyn is not in fully educated in that field.
I have had cancer three times and without proper care I wouldn't be here today...yet now with no insurance I am on a waiting list and it is even more scary, specially with my history.

As for you Becky, I will be praying for you and your new gyn. that on Oct 2 you will be seen with great care and your mind will be put to ease that you will have the answers needed to be well taking care of.
I myself have the same symptoms as you, I can't sleep at night anymore and I have started losing my appetite (for me that is very strange). Also swollen abdomin, cramps, nausea and side pains. Please let us know what you find out...

Praising God Daily,
MeLisa

Thanks for the responses -- I'm going to another GYN doctor on 10/02 (made the appointment a few minutes ago) my insurance will not cover a GYN/ONC without a cancer diagnosis so I think this is the best I can do for the moment.

Hi - i'm having some of the same problems:  lots of symptoms but no diagnosis through testing yet.  i don't know where you live, but around here you can't get into the OB/ONC without a cancer diagnosis.  what i did to find another GYN was ask my gastro, internist and urologist for their recommendations.  i finally got two to recommend the same doctor and will be seeing her.  once you've lost confidence in your doctor, it's time to move on!

I jumped into a lap in April for Sharp stabbing pains in the lower left side. Prior to lap u/s showed nothing. Did lap. I had alot of adhesions. Dr. saw this and thought this was the culprit for my pain. Wrong. I just had a CT Scan today to find out why I'm still having these pains, and also why I've been having hip pain. Please get a second opinion. Someone who can look outside the box. Maybe its not the obvious. Like your doctor my doctor thinks my problem could be endo again, but this time in my bowels. But my pain is also all the time. Not just around my period. Keep looking I'm on my 5th doctor.

Get your self to another dr!  I would highly suggest that you get the 2nd opinion from a gyn/onc as they are specialists in womens gyn issues.  They do not just deal with cancer.  Please listen to your husband on this issue and get the 2nd opinion.  Although 99% of ovarian cysts are benign, do not ignore your symptoms.  These cysts can throw off your hormonal balance causing missed periods.  They also cause pain, nausea and other gi issues.  Please, seek the 2nd opinion and keep us posted.

Ovarian Cancer cannot be confirmed by any other method than a biopsy taken during surgery.  By then, it's too late.  What are they going to do....call the insurance company from the OR to precert a GYN/ONC coming in to finish up?  It troubles me to think an insurance company will not authorize at least a consult with a GYN/ONC. I am not saying I think you have OvCa.  Most cysts are benign, but it still urks me at some of the things insurance companies deny!

Yep, I agree with you and Tascha.  At the very least, you should find a doctor who will listen to your concerns, not tell you his/her opinion is right, so let's not even explore the other issues.  You should know if your ovaries are working correctly, because if they are not, that could be a sign of trouble brewing.  Why don't you post your question to Dr. Goodman on the Ovarian Cancer Answers portion of this site.  She might be able to give you some direction so when you see a new doctor, you'll be more informed as to what questions to ask.
