MICKYVICKI(ANOTHER QUESTION PLEASE)

I hope you can give me some advice. Saw gp in june for change in bowel habits relating(i feel) to ovary pain. Sent for colonoscopy, which was clear. Ultrasound and vaginal scan showed(according to the report the gp read)10cm simple cyst on L ovary and smaller one on right and that the radiologist noted i was in pain when she scanned the left ovary.Saw gynocologist yesterday who told me i had a couple of SMALL cysts on my ovaries, that he feels this is not the cause of my pain, only larger cysts twist, that in a few weeks time they will be gone as he thinks they are folicule cysts, and that this is a bowel issue!
Help all this conflicting talk is doing my head in and i don't seem any closer to finding the causes. To recap i am 47 and stopped getting menopausal symptoms(hot flushes, ovulation pain, night sweats and bad moods) about 2 years ago. Pain more or less constant. Some days realy, realy bad, others bearable. Sitting hurts,as does bending over and when wind and gas pass the area.Sex is painful and somtimes when i pee which is all the time. Please can you advise as i dont know what to think or who to belive anymore.

Yes, this seems the wrong sort of foprum for these probs - and there soesn't seem to be one that quite matches these difficulties! You have clearly been through the mill!! Brings mine into proportion - nothing as bad as that (marital or physical) . I have made a quick note of your email, before anyone complains!

over the years i have been through so much, female anatomy wise nothing would surprise me!!If this helps. I have hystectomy at 25 sadley for me i was then married to a b*****d who went back to work as soon as i got home from hosp,i had 3 girls under 5.As you can imagine i did too much too soon. This resulted in bowel and bladder prolapse. I vividley remember my now husband(i divorced the other thank god) calling round unexpectantly after i had had bath and there i was making small talk in my nice WHITE cotton dressing gown when my bowel opened!. I had no idea until i felt somthing warm and wet(tmi i think but you get the gist)now the big question was how do i get out of the room without him seeing my back end!!!! I just got very brave and said excuse me look the other way and went and got cleaned up!!
Well we married and unfortunatley for me things progresed to the bedroom(know what i mean)sooooo embaressing!!!. Waited 4 years for prolapses to be done but was told by consultant that they were bad.Things have been ok but about 2 years ago bladder started to play up again and they again wanted to op but i have put it off(its not to bad at the minute) but i do notice that somtime i have a little bit of bowel(or back wall of vagina) hagging out of entrance to vagina, especially when i stand up. I think this has some bearing on my left ovary being so painful.Hang in there girl and dont be ashamed! get it sorted.

Thanks for your last reply!

I may come back to you - you're in the right 'region', though mine is old damage in the bowel area from giving birth to a very large baby. currently  being investigated (next test appt on 28/11), but today I have learned from the physio who deals with those areas that my voluntary muscle control apparently is very good! It wasn't three/four years ago, so my hard work has really paid off! Now I just have to wait to see what they tell me next, though I don't know when I will see the relevant specialist yet, it will be after 28/11 sometime obviously.

Hi Dawn
I plucked up the courage to call the radiologist who performed the scan this afternoon. She tells me the cyst on the LEFT OVARY IS 3cm and the cyst on the RIGHT OVARY IS 4cm. I now understand where the gyno was comming from as i have no real pain from the right side only the occassional twinge.I still feel that the ovary is causing the pain as this morn i had a really strange sensation in the left side(very diffacult to explain)not really painful. Well since then the pain has dimished into a dull throb and i have only taken 1 painkiller since 7.30 this morn. I hope to god it's burst! That said im am still going to push for the removal of my ovaries as who's to say if this would not be a regular accurance. My gyny did agree to take them out anyway.I can not go through all this red tape each time i get pain. What are you having done in nov?
Cheers for reply

Hi Dawn!

I am clearly luckier than you! I live in York. When they first found my cysts, one was 2 point something cm and the other one 4 point something. The smaller one looked septated and I was scared sh*tless. That was approx 18 months ago. I was followed up so fast that that in itself added to my anxieties! My first U/s (for post menopausal bleeding  which was seen as no prob, but the cysts they found caused concern)was in later part of may 2005. By mid July or thereabouts I had seen the gynonc 3 times I think (appts not well co-ordinated with tests, so saw him more than I needed to), by which time he decided that he wasn't worried and could explain why. But according to protocol the by then remaining cyst (still under 5cm then) was followed up both in November and again in april, by which time it had grown to over 5cm.I am very clear that this gynonc exactly follows the protocol as laid out on the green topped guidelines of RCOG, eg follow up for a year, and if the cyst then does something 'new' like mine, continue to follow up, thus my current appts. I am also lucky that the gynonc is perfectly pleasant, though it freaked my out that my septated cyst was completely overlooked and not explained when it disappeared. But after a bit of a hissy fit from me a got a good and helpful and re-assuring explanation. Generally I feel I have been well looked after. (Also I had a nasty, sudden eye inflammation last christmas period, and again I was followed up by specialist very quickly). I have another health probem which is potentially very embarrasing, but not scary, like potential ca. My appts then have been longer waits which has been OK by me. I know though that people can wait in considerable discomfort at times, and that's less good, and if it isn't serious  you can end up waiting with pain. And with everything you say, Dawn, you should be followed up properly, not dismissed! I agree with you about people who don't go to appts and don't cancel. I have a feeling it's on the agenda to do something about it, though.

I will continue to look out for your posts, to see how you get on.

Hi Dalip
I'm living in Cheshire were are you living?

A fine system is a good idea.  I do despair when I go into the GP's surgery and see the statistics regarding missed appointments.  You're charged if you miss a dental appointment and the same should apply for the NHS.  Though it is irritating that you have to ring up on the morning of admittance to the hospital for that all important operation to check if a bed is available!

I had my follow-up scan last Thursday (will find out the results this week) and was told by a patient that the scan appointments sometimes run into the evening!  I didn't get out until 5.45.

Having read your post I think you have got to find out how one scan showed 10cm cyst and yet the gynae thinks it is small - it's a BIG difference and you're entitled to a clearer explantion.

hi im in worcester
I have a chap at work who has missed 2 specialist app because they will not tell him what he wants to hear!!!.
My hubby and i were disscussing the size of the cyst today and we reckon my gp meant to say 4cm(it tallys with what gyny said)not 4 inches but i have to go back to gp tomorrow for painklillers so will find out.4 Inches freaked me out 4cm does not.
As for the nhs my daughter recently managed to get a sewing needle embeded in her foot and it had to stay there for 7 days before they found a bed for her so they could remove it!!!Over the course of 7 days she starved herself for 4 of them only for them to say no bed available. In the end they made her stay overnight only to get the darn(pun)thing out under lots of local(because they had bed but no theatre slot)and a large cut.
Whats your history i have read so many of these ques and replies over the last 2 weeks i dont know my adam from my eve.
Cheers dawn

yes i agree but dont you think it's about time the NHS  introduced a system of people not turning up for appointments(whether it be gp,consultant ect)being fined.Perhaps then we working class would not have to wait 6-8 weeks for an appointment!.As i have already said i paid

Hi Dawn (my name too!!)

I am in Cheshire and my local hospital is pretty poor to say the least.  Have had previous consults at Chester and been very pleased with both attention and timeframes.

Had to pay privately also for a consult as I was discharged from hospital without any advice or consult from a gynae, just a general surgeon who said I was not his problem (thanks for that!)  Say the head of gynaecology of my hospital privately in 10 days and was told that I would have to wait until Feb 07 to see him through the NHS.

I too am grateful for a state service that allows me whether rich or poor to be treated but it does seem insane that I can see the same person but 6 months earlier.

I must say I felt more confident being pushy when I was paying for the consultation as it was my

Please don't feel sorry for us with'socialized' medicine. Obviously , as with any system it has it drawbacks, but the us one also sometimes seems very complicated, if you don't have money, and often when I have read threads I have felt grateful to have our NHS - problems and all!!!! I will absolutely stand up and fight for it's principle any day !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi there, I hope you get it worked out, I just wanted to say I feel so sorry for you people from places with socialized medicine.  Seems you have to wait so long and pay for a lot out of your pockets.  I  am sorry you have to go through so much.  I hope you get it figured out, it almost seems to me like we are all going through mysteries.  Trying to figure out what is wrong from the clues, never knowing what is the right next step to take.  Take care, Mery

I have only had 1 scan which was done in sept. The gynocologist was reading the same report my gp had. Thus i am confused when gp says its 10cm and consultant says it's small! Gastric surgeon says you dont get painfull sex with bowel problems!gyny says dont get constant pain with small cysts. I had to pay

Seems strange advice to me.  Previous posts and first hand experience say that the general advice is that any cyst over 5cm is unlikely to resolve by itself and irrespective of whether it is a cause for concern (ie ovca) should be removed as they can cause severe pain.

Having been on the end of a large cyst that ruptured it is very unpleasant and quite scary so I can understand having it removed.

Perhaps a second opinion might be worthwhile.  Every surgeon/consultant will have their own protocol how they want to proceed, sometimes it is useful to get a second opinion.

I have to say my gynae tried to pull the "it's difficult to tell if it is your bowel or your ovaries causing the problem" but as I said to him if he can't rule out the ovaries as a problem then the general surgeon is unwilling to look at me for bowel surgery so I would just get passed between the two of them until I ended up in A&E.  He seemed to take this on board and am having surgery in a few weeks.

If you are not happy with the planned treatment please question it asap.

Take care

Dawn, you MUST go back to your GP again!!!! Clearly you need more investigations! Did not your gynasecologist arrange for you to see someone else!! The amount of pain you describe must so inhibit normal life for you! Are you working? In that case can you manage?

I am glad to hear your cysts seem to be disappearing! That is common. I had one (of two in total) which looked complex that was completely gone by the time I first saw the gynonc, now approx 15 months ago. Re pain, my cyst (the remaining one) had grown past 5cm on my last u/s, but I can't say it causes pain. Yes, I have had twinges, but nothing that interferes with normal life. (I'm due back for another u/s in a few days - will it have gone or will it have grown?)So it is possible to have cysts without pain.

If nothing else go and see the GP again urgently!!!!!!
