CA-125

My Mom had a CA-125 level of 10 before her hysterectomy and now she just got the results back and it has risen to over 40. Why would this be? They confirmed it was stage 1 ovarian cancer but it was confined to the ovaries and she starts chemo next week. Just confused why the rise in the CA-125 levels...

thanks

My OVCA was stage 1 as well and my CA 125 was 27 before surgery and into the hundreds after; but went down to the single digits during/after chemo.  It is very common for this to happen as surgery messes up our systems and the lining of the periteneom (sp?) according to my surgeon.  Good luck to your mom.  She's very lucky to such a concerned daughter.

My CA 125 went up after surgery and I was told it was normal to go up.  The explanation I was given was that the handling of the tissue causes it to go up.  The next one after chemo was decreased.  Good luck to your mom.
