.My mother, a 45 years old patient, case of CA ovary stage IIIC completed successfuly her first line chemotherapy(Taxol:300mg, Carboplatin:550mg). The CT scan for chest, abdomen and pelvis was free of disease, her CA125 was 6. Her dr decided to give her maintenance chemotherapy (6 additional cycles)and he wants to give her carboplatin.

I want to know if carboplatin is superior to taxol or not as maintenance chemotherapy.

r_khairyDear r_khairy, Currently the use of maintainence chemotherapy after first line treatment of ovarian cancer continues to be evaluated. To date information shows some benefit to use of taxol as maintenance therapy, although research continues. There are no reports regarding the use of carboplatin as maintenance therapy for ovarian cancer. A gyn/oncologist would be the appropriate specialist to make recommendations regarding the issue of maintenance therapy, if your mother is not seeing a gyn/oncologist a second opinion to discuss this issue may be helpful.
