hysterectomy / oophorectomy

by LauraTA, Sep 14, 2004 12:00AM
I am 33 and was diagnosed w/ ovarian cancer 18 months ago when I had a cyst removed laparoscopically from my right ovary.  Only the right ovary was affected, and so it was removed.  I did not have a complete staging but was considered to be Stage 1c since there was some spillage from the ovary.  We kept the left ovary to preserve fertility since I was just about to be married.  A lot of endometriosis was found and removed.

I had six chemo treatments but my CA-125 was normal right after the surgery.  I had a second-look via laparscope after my last chemo.  No additional cancer was found.

In Feb. of this year, my CA-125 went up to 51 but went down to normal again a few weeks later ( also had a cyst come and go ). Then, in July it went up to 86 but in August went down to 56.  Meanwhile, a sizable mass which appears to be endo was found on my left ovary and has not resolved a month later.  Oncologist does not think it is cancer since my CA-125 has gotten lower and feels that the endo is probably affecting the blood work.  He is scheduling a CT scan and gave me a nasal spray for endo ( I have not started it yet ) to see if it makes the mass shrink.  He is letting me decide if I want to have surgery or not.

I have pretty much decided to have the left ovary removed but I don't know if I should have a complete hysterectomy or just oophorectomy.    Also, does it sound reasonable to leave the ovary if all indicates that it is just endometriosis?  Thanks for your insight!
