Difference between ultrasound and HCG Levels

I had my first pregnancy appointment last week and with an ultrasound saw the baby with a heartbeat. The doctor told me the baby measured at 5 1/2 weeks although I thought it was more like 7 1/2 weeks due to the date of my last period. Today, they told me that my hcg levels appeared high for 5 1/2 weeks (but said the ultrasound was more accurate for dating). What does it mean to have high hcg levels? I wasn't told the exact level and am very worried that something is wrong.
Also another reason you may think differently and the dr thinks dates are different are more bc of not all woman have the same cycle lenght. Even though you may go 28 days between periods you might not ovulate on day 14. You may ovulate on day 18. : ) HTH some.
