Sex drive declined after taking anti-malarial medication

by MSooz, Nov 24, 2006 12:00AM
I have been taking anti-malarial medication (Doxymed/ Doxyclene) for 5 weeks as I am in a high-risk area at the moment. I have not noticed any of the more common side-effects to taking this medication, such as sun-sensitive skin etc, but have noticed a sharp decline in my ability to become aroused. I have been with my partner now for just over a year and we are very much in love, and I am still very attracted to him. There are no other problems in our relationship that I can see would make me feel this way, he is very caring, compasionate and sensitive to my needs (sexually and other) and knows what to do to get me aroused. We have had a very healthy sex life together so far, and I am very concerned as this problem could have long term effects on our otherwise healthy relationship shoud the contine. I want to ask if this medication has ever been known to have this side effect, and should I stop taking it?

I am not medical doctor and I have no idea if this could be the cause of your lack of sexual drive. I have taken anti malarials quite a few times and noticed no change myself but everyone reacts to medicines differently. I would go to a tropical medicine specialist ( almost always available on college campus health clinics and usually available in city public health clinics) and find out if this has ever been reported. In any case, there are several choices among anti malarials and you might try and get on another drug and see what happens.
