Isoniazid or other infections?

by alde, Jun 06, 2004 12:00AM
Hi,  I have had a positive TB protein derivative skin test followed by several chest x-rays.  The x-rays showed that my lungs are clear and free of tuberculosis.  The doctor prescribed me with 6 months of isoniazid 300mg tablets just for safety reasons.

I am currently at about 2 weeks into this antibiotic medication.

At around the 10th day, I returned to the doctor for a check-up and the blood test showed that my platelet count was higher than normal about 550,000.  My doctor suspected it to be the effect of the isoniazid since my platelet count was perfectly normal in a previous blood test right before the start of the medication.  He didn't know exactly what's going on with my body at this point and re-scheduled me for another check-up 2 weeks later.

I have tried to search for isoniazid-induced thrombocytosis and related types of issues on line (on credible web sources such as pubmed), but I haven't found any relavent information.  What are your expert recommendations and thoughts on this?  Thank you for your time.

Almost any medicine can cause a transient increase in platelets.  I wouldn't be concerned unless the count was greater than 1 million.

Hey,

that's interesting to me because I was just diagnosed with TB and also put on he same drug. I had to really push the doctor to give the test to me and although it was positive he stated it was negative while a pulminary specialist informed me that is was indeed positive and put me on the 6 months of Iso.

The only reason I was so insistant for the test was I've had a cough for 6 months now. It started in January when I fought a losing battle with the flu. Everything cleared up except for the chronic cough. I was wondering if you've experienced anything like this?

Thanks for your comment.  My experiences are a little different.  Although I was tested positive, I didn't have any of the signs that are typical for tuberculosis.  In fact, pulmonary analyses showed that my lung are perfectly clear.  My doctor suspected that positive test coud be due to a TB vaccine that I received when I was a baby.  But he has never seen a case where blood platelet count was significantly higher after taking isoniazid.  I was quite concerned about this phenomenon and tried to do searches on the internet, but I found nothing.
