Coughing, then vomitting how it is stopped

by worriedsis, Jul 10, 2005 12:00AM
My brother has been coughing and vomitting for many years.  It usually occurs after eating...he will start to cough, very mucous sounding cough and then eventually he will vomit. Sometimes he doesn't have anything to eat and he still has the cough or he is always clearing his throat and then eventually again he will cough.

How do i go about getting him the proper help he needs.  Also he is mentally challenged so it is very difficult to get him to tell me what he is feeling i mainly have to keep observing him from what he eats and if he is eating, that is also a problem since he has lost a tremendous amount of weight and refuses to eat sometimes or forgets.  Years ago he had an stomach ulcer and then he had to get gallbladder surgery due to stones. I am wondering maybe that this was the culprit since all of this started occurring after these instances. Thank you for listening. worried sister.

Your brother will need a thorough exam to find the source of the mucus.  His weight loss probably relates to the difficulty he has keeping food “down”.  To find out if there are other causes, your brother would need to be examined by a gastrointestinal specialist.  This exam may include a swallowing study and an esophagogastroscopy.  A swallowing study is an x-ray test using fluoroscopy to watch for problems as barium is swallowed.  Barium causes the digestive tract to stand out in silhouette when viewed through a fluoroscope or seen on x-ray film.  During an esophagogastroscopy a camera at the end of a small flexible tube that is long enough to reach from the mouth to the stomach is used.  This scope is passed through the mouth to look at the entire length of the esophagus as well as the stomach.
