Hole in diaphragm of fetus

by Chantal, Feb 26, 2002 12:00AM
Situation: Pregnant mother is carrying fetus which upon delivery in mid March will require an operation to close a hole in the diaphragm. This condition is causing pressure on the other internal organs of the fetus. It is of note that the lungs are developing and that the baby is in postion to be delivered.

My questions are:

What is this condition called? (hermaphrdite diaphragm?)

How could this current condition be affecting the fetus?

Is it a genetic condition?

Is it possible for the condition to correct itself?

Could this condition have been caused by parasites in the body such as a flukes or schistosomes?

If so, can we not administer something that would kill the parasites and enable the hole to repair itself?

This is a potentially critical situation for the infant when it is born because of the potential for neonatal respiratory distress. I would suggest being in contact with a high quality neonatal center now to review the information that is present and plan for the next steps upon delivery.
