1-year-old coughing, reflux, asthma, allergies?

by saslabebs, Jun 01, 2006 12:00AM
My one-year-old daughter coughs about 10-15 times a day. Each time she will cough until she is able to bring something up and then swallows it. It happens most often during the day but at night some too. She was diagnosed with silent reflux as a baby and put on Prevacid solutabs. We weened her off at 6 months but recently she was put back on them in hopes of helping the cough and making her more comfortable to sleep as she has not slept through the night yet. However, the Prevacid is not working and seems to be making her have more gas problems. Also recently she had a type of bacteria the doctor thought was in the nose that supposedly she rubbed on her face which broke out in chicken-pox like bumps. She was given a cream for that and the doctor said that may even be the cause of the cough but still it continues.

Someone mentioned it could be asthma, another said allergies, the pediatrician doesn't seem to help and I am unsure which direction to head to get her some help. What could cause a cough like this? Is there a specialist I should see?

With a cough that has lasted so long, I would recommend seeing a pediatric pulmonologist.  Although it is a good sign that your daughter is not coughing at night, coughing this long needs to be evaluated.

Hi,  I wonder if she may have a sinus infection?  My daughters both suffer from chronic sinusitus and acid reflux disease.  They can go hand in hand.  We have found that our allergist is the best for treating these illnesses but certainly a gastrointestinal doctor could help you with your childs tummy issues too Good luck!

Hi Saslabes,

This sounds 100% acid reflux. As a sure sign is that she is bringing food up each time. No matter how small it is.

What you need to do is try a number of things to assist the tablets, Make sure she drinks plenty of fluids and not so much acidic food (Which I know is quite hard with children) but to keep an eye, nothing too heavy for at least 2 hours before she falls asleep.

In the meantime ,Let your GP know that she is having these symptoms and that the tablets are not helping.

By keeping a list of every time it happens(Ie , what she eats before it happens etc) May help

Good luck!

Tickle in your throat, as a result a cough you can't get rid of?

Hear Ye , Hear Ye!

I found what was the cause. Please pass to all concerned, I have been sick with this tickle in my throat for about 2 years now.   Did all the Throat and Lung Biopsies, Thank God is all negative.  Changed high blood pressure medicin.  Yet, that annoying cough and or tickle did not go away. Did stomache Acid Flux Biobsy and still nothing.   Doctors do not have a clue why many people are getting this tickle... took inhalers still nothing. I am fine until I start talking, only then , the throat tickles and I cough. pretty weird.    Took herbal medicins and not changes, Honey, Garlic. etc.. Well Folks, Guess what.  The cause was a freaking FAN!   for 2 years I slept under a FAN.   Never caught a cold!  thats why it never dawned on me.  Remedy, take coricidin for a few days and do not sleep under a fan or in a direction of wind.  this tickle will go away within a week or so.  Happy ending after 2 years. till your doctors to ask their patients if they sleep under a fan.. :O)from freepctoo.com
