I'm 20 years old and have just been told there are spots on my right lung.

Hi.

I'm a 20 year old male. I went to the ER a few nights ago because I was had pains in my arm for a week, and I started getting a pain in the upper left area of my chest. Shortly after, my heart started beating rapidly. My entire body began to feel very weak, and my eyes then got extremely heavy. This was all accompanied by the feeling of passing out, or fainting. When I got to the hospital they did some general tests. My heart rate was 107, blood pressure was borderline. They then did blood test, an ekg, and chest x rays. The ekg came out "perfect." The only thing that was wrong with my blood work was my sugar was high and my protein was low. They set me up with a doctor to see a couple days later. I was released from the hospital and went to the doctors. Everything at the doctors went well except I was told they found a granuloma/or granulomas on my right lung. The doctor was not specific. I then became very nervous and started asking many questions as would anyone. He told me he really didnt think it was anything to worry about. He said a granuloma is scar tissue from an infection. He told me it was unlikely that it was cancer. So here is my symptoms and lifestyle. I have an unmedicated thyroid condition. I'm 20, a male, non smoker. I do often feel like I have to yawn, so I will inhale, often feel unsatisfied with the breath taken, so I continue to strain my chest to get that big deep breath. I do get ver minor chest pain, as well in the area located where my right and left lung are, and I am tired lately. I have to get an x ray in a month. Should I be worried?

You should not be worried about your heart, your lungs or the recently discovered granuloma(s).  The likelihood that the granuloma(s) would be cancer is very low.  The explanation and reassurance the doctor gave you about granuloma(s) is valid.

The symptoms that brought you to the hospital were most likely a result of anxiety.  Perhaps this anxiety was due to a musculoskeletal type pain of your arm or your untreated thyroid condition causing an abnormal heartbeat.  You should definitely have follow-up for the high blood sugar and for your thyroid condition.

If your thyroid is overactive, that could also have caused your feeling of passing out or fainting.

Bret - The vast majority of lung nodules are not malignant.  Your doctor is right about that.  It could very easily be the result of an infection from pnuemonia or something else like a fungal infection.  In the Southwest U.S, there is a lot of fungal infections called coccidiodomycosis.  In the midwest, there is a condition that comes from fungal infections called histoplasmosis.  You might ask your doc to test you for those to see if you have a current or past infection.

I would highly doubt you have any malignancy to worry about.

I have had a very similar problem recently. I am also 20 years old (Female) I have been having these "spells" even when i'm not doing anything to exert myself, for instance I was sitting in a class when all of a sudden I felt very light-headed like I would pass out. the spell usually starts with a very rapid heart beat and than the passing out feeling. I always feel the need to get up and walk around when this happens so as not to pass out. I have been to a cardiologist and have been told as is well. He had a thyroid test ran and I was told I was border line Hyper active but when they tested the same blood again they told me all was well. I too am Scared and am not sure wether I should do another test or where to go from here. I thought maybe it was the result of caffenine but I am not too sure that is really it ( I thought this might explain the heart palpitations.) let me know what you think.

In January of this year, the same thing happened to me.  I am a 28 year old woman with no history of any health problems.  I was awakened by pain in my upper chest and arm.  I got up to "shake it off" and then my heart started pounding.  I just knew I was having a heart attack.  I thought I was going to pass out and it was "the end".  My husband called 911 and I was taken to the ER via ambulance.  They did an EKG, chest Xray, CT scan, and blood work. They told me I had an anxiety attack and released me. The next day, I received a phone call from the hospital and they said there was a 5 mm nodule on the upper lobe of my left lung. Talk about anxiety!  Although they are certain this is nothing other than a scar that could have been there for a long time, they suggest having a follow up CT scan in 6 months.  I saw my primary care physician and he did a couple lung capacity tests in his office and said everything seems perfect.  Of course I still worry because I should have had the CT scan already but now I'm pregnant. My point is that I would have never expected that I could have had an anxiety attack, but apparently I did. Perhaps that has happened to you. I'm sure that whatever they have noticed on your lung isn't of great concern, but I can relate to the worry.  Good luck!
