discoid atelectasis in the lingula of the left lung.

Someone close to me has to see a lung specialist, due to having had recurring pneumonias. the last chest xray showed what I described in the subject area with this statement. Impression: Interstitial Pulmonary Fibrosis. What does this mean? I read something about that and it is not good.

When pneumonia clears away it is common for discoid atelectasis to linger behind.  These are collapsed areas of the lung that have a linear or horizontal appearance.  It looks like CDs, viewed from the side.  Most instances of discoid atelectasis are of no consequence to a person’s health.

Interstitial pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a disease of unknown cause.  This leads to scarring that is scattered throughout the lung.  It can range from mild to severe.  If the scarring is in the area where the pneumonia was, it may be atelectasis rather than IPF.

Please wait until you have further information from additional testing, including a CT scan of the lungs, before you conclude that this is bad news for your friend.
