Meconium Aspiration

by Protect Babies, Mar 19, 2002 12:00AM
What is Meconium Aspiration.  There was a still born and he was said to have died in the womb from Meconium aspiration.  I thought babies breathed through their umbilical cord taking oxygen from the mother's body through the cord, and did not breathe in the womb through their mouth...how then did the baby get this condition in its lungs to cause it to be poisoned.  Was the trouble in the lungs, or where does Meconium cause the problem.  Is it a toxic condition through out the whole womb?

Is it possible any stretching of the membranes may cause infection in the womb, or even gels used to soften the cervic?

Anyone may contact me directly, thank you.   ***@****

Expelling and inhaling meconium is a sign of fetal distress. It usually indicates that the fetus had poor circulation through the placenta and/or umbilical cord. This is often due to a poorly formed placental and/or fetal circulation. The trouble in the lungs with meconium starts AFTER birth, and would not be pertinent to a stillborn infant. In this case, the meconium was a symptom of illness, NOT the cause of it, if the newborn was truly stillborn.
