costochondritis?

by javens, Sep 16, 2002 12:00AM
Hi, I am a 22 year old male. i went to the dr. last october complaining about horrible pain in my pubic symphisis area. Gave me pain killers, pain went away in 2 weeks. this pain returned in june. Went to dr -thought it was muscle related. two weeks later I started having pain in my rt upper chest when I breathed deep. within a couple of days,I had pain throughout my ribcage-upper&lower-both sides. pain worsened when I twisted my chest or press on my sternum. Dr.gave me chest x-ray,ct scan of abdomin and pelvis. bloodwork(blood count, lyme, thyroid, one that checked most organs, lupus, cpk test)-all normal.I was very worried that I had something serious and had lots of panic attacks. I had also had dirrhea since the begining of june-saw gastro-had colonoscopy and endoscopy-normal. Diagnosed IBS. In the end of July,I began experiencing muscle fasciculations all over my body.

I also noticed that the muscles that twitched alot would get sore. Of course I was then worried about als or something neurological. Went to neurologist, had neuro exam and emg-both normal. Also had Brain MRI-normal. he diagnosed benign fasiculation syndrome.I still have anterior chest pain, pain on rt.side of chest near sternum, various "sore" spots on rib cage, diarrhea, muscle fasiculations, fatigue, widespread muscle pain, back pain and although my horrible pubic/groin pain is alot better, I still feel discomfort there occasionally. My DR. is going to have me see a rheumitologist about possible fibromyalgia.Does my chest pain sound like costochondritis?fibro?

The description of your chest pain does suggest that it involves the muscles.  This could include costochondritis.  The other disease that comes to mind is relapsing polychondritis.  This would not account for your diarrhea and fasciculations.  Relapsing polychondritis is a reoccurring problem where connective tissue becomes swollen.  This connective tissue is found in the ears, joints, nose, larynx, trachea, eyes, heart valves, kidneys, and blood vessels.  I strongly agree that you should see a rheumatologist to learn what is causing your symptoms.  You might want to ask him/her about the possibility of relapsing polychondritis also.
