could taking oxycontin with asthma cause breathing problems leading to fatal respiratory failure ?

It is possible to have serious adverse reactions with OxyContin®, just like with any opioid pain medicine.  This is more likely to happen when too much is taken.  These reactions are possible even in people without a breathing problem like asthma.  Respiratory depression can happen where the depth of breathing becomes shallow and the rate slows.  Apnea can occur where there are lapses in breathing that can last up to one minute.  And even respiratory arrest that could result in fatal respiratory failure.

If you are allergic to it!  I'm allergic to "coedine" and anything that is a derivative or otherwise related triggers the same response.  The anthestiologist (sp?) who did my saddle block when I had my daughter learned this the hard way -- he had to hand me my albuterol inhaler just as I was about to start pushing because my oxygen levels had plummeted (along with the baby's heart rate).  The albuterol saved me -- they slapped an oxygen mask on me and let me push her out. (This was an unusaul solution -- albuterol is contraindicated in labor 'cause it tends to stop it!)  Interestingly, when I got my file later for my allergist, this little interlude with the oxygen and albuterol was not in the progress notes!
