queasy after nasal wash, but chest pain improving

by Hunty, Jul 07, 2003 12:00AM
I began doing 3 nasal washes a day, to help with allergies, a slight pain in my right lung and post nasal drip.  After about 3 days of doing this, I became very queasy and eventually I got a sinus infection and what felt like the flu.  I have used the technique that was recommended here, but I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience.  I thought that similar to doing any sort of detox regiment, that it is possible to feel cruddy early on as the toxins are being "stirred up", and that eventually it would improve.  I refrained from doing the washes while I was sick, and have now started them back up again.  Is 3 a day too much?  One exciting development was that the chest pain I had been experiencing in my right lung went away while I was sick and has since returned just slightly.  This was, of course, very exciting, as I have been very concerned about it for months.  I am hoping that what I feel is a build up of mucous in my chest and that is starting to clear out.  I do not have a chronic cough, but I do draw up phelgm once or twice a day that is clear with specks of gray.  Any input is much appreciated!!!  Thank you.

You have asked several questions in this note and I will try to answer them.  Nasal washes are not a specific therapy, such as an antibiotic or antihistamine.  They simply loosen the mucus that is in your nose and possibly the maxillary sinus to allow for better clearance and drainage.  Doing this three times a day, if it is not a difficult thing for you, is not too much.  All you are putting into your nose is a saline solution that is very safe.  If the congestion and drainage improves, you can discontinue this treatment at any time and start again as it is needed.

It is not clear as to the cause of the pain you have described.  It could be from your lungs, the lining of your lungs or in the muscles and nerves outside of the lungs.  If this is a problem for you, it is best to see your physician to determine the precise nature of this and help to treat it.  It is not likely that this pain has any direct relationship to the saline nasal washes.  It is also not likely this is from mucus in your lungs.  This would more likely cause you to cough, which you do not seem to have.

I hope this helps.
