about blood test results

I work in the health care field and have always been very careful with sexual partners.  I have never had any outbreaks or symptoms of STDS.  I recently went for a check up and had all my blood work done.  My Doctor had her nurse call me with the results and when I asked her questions she couldn't answer them, finally after much effort on my part the MD called me to explain the results. I still feel she did a terrible job of explaining the results and what I should next. My boyfriend, who I have been with for 6 months had a blood test done 2 months ago and he was told everything was negative, but ofcourse I don't know the specific tests taken. Also, we have always used condoms, except with oral sex.

I finally just recieved the blood results via mail. They left me very confused and I don't have faith in the MD to clarify them. My blood test results showed HSV 1/2 IGG (type specific AB)type 1: (.75) type 2: (.05)  a negative result is <.90

Then it simply states HSV IGM w/RFL titer was detected and rsults in 1:40.

Ultimately, my question is what does this mean? Do I have HSV, can you have false positive, and what should I do next?  Should I have a more specific test done, like the finger ***** or western blot.  Should a normal IGG be 0.0 and could the level eventually increase since my IGM antibodies were detected.  As you can I see I have a lot of questions so hopefully someone can give me some adequate medical advice.

thank you

Those numbers look like you had the HerpeSelect test, which the right one.  The IgG results are the only ones I know how to interpret, and they indicated unequivocally that you are not (and never have been) infected with HSV type 1 or 2.  But this assumes it's the HerpeSelect test.

The confusing part is the IgM result.  There is no IgM HerpeSelect test.  IgM antibody is meaningless in herpes diagnosis, a waste of the lab's time and someone's (your or your insurance company's) money.

Bottom line:  It is likely you are negative for both HSV-1 and -2.  You don't need further testing.

See numerous other threads on this; you can plug in HerpeSelect, genital herpes, and herpes diagnosis as search terms.
