Chlamydia test accuracy

I met A 10 and 3 days before I fell sick. Each time, she gave me an unprotected blowjob, sex was with condom. I had fever for 2 days, sore throat, and some redness on my penis. A visit to the doctor diagnosed it as NGU from a swab test and microscopic exam (no culture results yet). Incidentally I also had unilateral pink eye, which seems to implicate Chlamydia. Im on 1g Azithro and my pink eye is clearing up.

A told me that she had clear STD results before she met me. My question is, is it possible that she has a throat infection with chlamydia that was undetected by a vaginal swab test? Also what are the risks if her throat infection goes untreated?  Thanks for your time.

Actually, the simultaneous occurrence of NGU and conjunctivitis (pink-eye) is more suggestive of an adenovirus infection than chlamydia.  Adenovirus is a common respiratory virus that can simultaneously infect the urethra; causes around 5% of NGU cases; is typically assoicated with conjunctivitis; and often causes fever, which neither regular NGU nor chlamydia ever does.  Chlamydia rarely infects the throat, and transmission to a partner's urethra by oral sex has never been shown to occur.

I can't say for sure that you and/or your partner had adenovirus, but it is a better bet than chlamydia.  Alternativelu, you may have had two separate problems, NGU and an unrelated respiratory infection causing your fever and sore throat.  NGU can be caused by normal oral bacteria transmitted during oral sex; and of course garden-variety respiratory viruses are often transmitted between sex partners.

Bottom line:  If your symptoms clear up, all will be well.  You probably will never know for sure what the exact cause(s) were, but you can be pretty confident it wasn't chlamydia.

Tks doc. I did tell her immediately upon my diagnosis. Im not sure if she has followed up, but she says she has. I advsied her to get a throat swab done. I knw she has a number of partners and she regularly takes *** in her mouth & swallows. I think the docs here havent actually told me what bug it is, except that its NGU. I think most likely that I got it from her, although I had another bare bj 4 wks earlier from somone else. I dont knw how common adenovirus is in Singapore.

Tks in advance.

I also forgot to mention that my eye doc gave me oxytetracylcine cream and levofloxaxin drops. Its been 6 days after starting treatment and my left care is clearing up, major redness gone, whites are back. But my right eye may be starting up.

The occurrence of conjunctivitis in the second eye, especially after you started antibiotics, is strong evidence against chlamydia and in favor of a virus such as adenovirus.  Adenovirus does not respond to any of the treatments you have been given, but will clear up on its own.

Tks for ur reply. So I take it that Adenovirus is non-STD transmitted then? Do I have to worry abt infected my girl then? Pls advise. Tks

Your original question didn't say another person might be at risk. If you have had sex with your regular partner since the episode you describe with the new partner, from the standpoint of your girlfriend's health, the safest thing to do is tell her so she can see her own health care provider and get tested for STDs.  Adeno clears up on its own within 10-14 days, so if you haven't had contact with her and wait that long, she probably isn't at risk.  But I stress that I don't know for sure you have adenovirus; it's just a possibility and I cannot make a specific diagnosis.

Bottom line:  If you have had sex with your girlfriend since the event, she should be told.  If not, and your symptoms clear up, it may not be necessary.

I just came back from my annual pap exam and I bled during the process.  My docotr informed me that this could be because I may have chlamydia.  How accurate is this?  Also, I am 4 days away from starting my period could this also be the cause of bleeding?

Hi, its been 2 wks after my Azithro treatment & my review says Im cleared. Couple of things kinda bother me. Im located in Singapore, and my local clinic thinks I got Chlamydia from unprotected bj, they say that the bacteria can reside in the mucous membranes of the throat and get passed down my urethra when I get bj'd.

As I mentioned, I met A 10 & 3 days before I got sick with fever, sore throat (Sat to Sun, 2dys), fever subsided on erythro treatment then redness on my meatus, pink eye cos I touched myself on Sun.

On both times, I did some deep kissing with A, protected sex, a little cunnilingus, and mainly bj from her. I also shared a drink with her.

On Tue I did my Chlamydia test which they told me I had wbc in my swab exam.

My question is: could I have caught it (Chlamydia) from A? You mentioned that sorethroat & fever is rare with Chamydia infection. Im puzzled as hell, cos of this. 4 wks earlier I met B for juz a uncovered bj, so Im wondering who I got it from.

Also does washing with betadine after bj help in any way?

Tks for your time. Im v grateful.

Hi doc, Im really kind of confused as you have stated that chlamydia of the penis is never acquired from bjs. The info seems unlike what my local clinic is saying, and from what some STD websites are stating Pls do help to clarify. Your time & effort is much appreciated.
