Chances of herpes

Dr,

ABout a month ago i had a sexual encoutner with a women and had unprotected sex with her.  I got kinda freaked out , and asked her before hand if she had any known stds.  She said no and she hasnt had sex in 3 months and she regularlly goes to the obgyn because of  yeast problems or something.  Something about eating to much dairy.

Any how,  i felt some bruning feeling down below the next day of so so i went to 3 differnet doc 2 at 8 days and 1 at 16 days.  and they check my tounge, looked for swollen glands and so forth.  All 3 checck my penis and found nothing there.  all test for clymdia, syphlis, and urinary tract infections came back neg at 9 days.  I also took a herpes select test at 16 days and it came back hsv1 4.65  hsv2 .13.  igm-  not detected.  I know igm doesnt mean ****.  But anyhow are my chances of catching anything from this one time encounter lessened now.  i have no symptoms beside some irratiions but it only appears after masturbation and im sure thats the reason.  Not tired or anything like that and no fever.  Am i safe to say im ok from this one time enounter.   Can i take another herpes select test at 5-6 weeks and will that be pretty accurate?  Is my window period shorter due to that fact that i have hsv1.  Which i have known because i get canker sores in my mouths since i was 12.  My long time girl friend and i are getting back together and she wants to stop using condoms.  I havent given in yet and just want to be safe when i do.

You clearly have no STD.  I base that on the fact that 3 doctors (three, for goodess’ sake!) couldn’t find anything wrong and your tests all were negative.  I cannot improve on that level of reassurance.  Anyway, the chance is low of catching genital herpes during any particular sexual encounter.  So unless you know your partner had herpes, I see no need for further testing for HSV.  But if you want to do it anyway, that’s fine with me.  If so, I suggest waiting until 3 months after the exposure, not 5-6 weeks; the window period for HSV-2 seroconversion is no different in people with or without prior HSV-1 infection.  In the meantime, I think you can safely stop using condoms with your regular girlfriend.

For what it is worth, your canker sores and your positive HSV-1 test probably have nothing to do with one another.  Recurrent canker sores are not normally due to herpes; canker sores nad herpes are entirely different conditions.

Good luck-- HHH, MD
