Paranoid or std

Hello

3 weeks ago I met this girl and for the first week there was no intercourse, just masturbation with each other. Occasionally our genitals touched but I can only remember that it happened once.

After that week, we start having sex-protected, But no oral sex. I asked her if she was healthy and she said that she got tested 2 month ago and she was fine. (I don’t know at this point if she is lying or not).  As for me I have not had sex in a great while and I am healthy.

3 days ago, I start feeling slight burning on the tip of my penis I can’t localize the burn but I think that it’s on the tip. When I urinate, the burn goes away. I don’t feel any burning during urination. And I though at first that it might be dehydration but i keep drinking water and my urine now is not even yellow.

Now I push my self to urinate when I feel the slight burn to the point where I don’t know if it became a frequent urination or just mental condition.  I don’t itch, or have anything new that is abnormal (no redness, no discharge, no sores...etc) and I even squeezed my penis to see if it will discharge but it didn’t. I have the normal pimples on my shoulder or face (after I shave). Also the burning sensation comes and goes.

Could I have contracted anything like gonorrhea or Chlamydia or any other STD? Or is it irritation due to the latex or lubricant on it or because I have not had sex in a while? My logical senses tell me that the risk of getting something is low because of the condoms and no weird sex at all but the burning sensation is playing with my head. I just want to know. I forgot to mention that when I ejaculated yesterday I felt a burn inside my penis as the semen was coming out and today i woke up with a slight sensation in my throat. am i jst being too paranoid?

Thank you doctor.

Burning alone with out discharge might be irritation from lubricant, especially if you used condoms with the spermicide nonoxynol-9.  You clearly could not have acquired an STD that would cause urethritis with the exposures you describe, i.e. if the condoms were properly used.  If you can't see any discharge, even early in the morning before you urinate the first time, then I suggest just sitting tight and not worrying about it if the symptom goes away.  But if it continues, or of course if you see abnormal discharge, you and your partner should both get examined.

Or if you just want reassurance, you both could go to your local health dept or Planned Parenthood for STD screening.  Your partner might appreciate the gesture: she has been tested recently, so why not you?  Do it together as a partnership thing.

"Paranoid" isn't the right word, but anxiety is a good explanation for much of what you describe.  Relax.  You have done everything right: you got to know your partner (at least a little bit) before hopping in the sack, spoke with each other about STD risks, and are using condoms.  Your risk is very low.  If everyone followed your path, most STDs would simply fade away.  If you're going to worry about this sort of exposure, you'd better plan on being celibate--which I don't recommend for anybody.

Good luck--  HHH, MD
