STD's from oral sex

by Bob61, Apr 27, 2007 12:00AM
I wrote to you on April 2nd about an episode of oral sex I had with another man on March 25th and my concerns regarding STD's. Since then I have recently been tested for HIV which was negative (although I know it is too soon but was part of the package) along with the following STD's :

V.D.R.L. (which I assume is Syphilis) - result : not reactive

Anti-Chlamydia (IgG) 8.0 IA
Anti-Chlamydia (IgM) 3.5 IA
(I'm told below 9 is negative. 9.1-9.9 is intermediate and above 10 is positive)

Anti-herpes type II (IgG) 0.9 AI
Anti-herpes type II (IgM) 4.2 AI
I'm told Positive is over 11

Can you confirm that all above definitely mean I'm negative for these STD's. I could not get a test done for gonarrhea as they say they can only test if I have any secretions, which I have not, but what concerns me is that for the past 2 weeks I have developed an urge to urinate all the time. It is not painful when I urinate but I feel I need to go all the time and often not much comes out. It's more uncomfortable than painful. Could gonorrhea or any other STD not mentioned cause this feeling or is it probably something completely unrelated to my act of oral sex. (What I did not mention in my post of April 2nd is that the person also perforemed oral sex on me, but not for that long). I have an appointment next week with a urologist, but I'm still worried sick that I may have caught something. Thanks to you and this fabulous website which gives us all a place to discuss our problems without any form of judgement.

Yes, VDRL is negative for syphilis, but that result is meaningless with respect to your exposure a week previously; VDRL takes 4-6 weeks to become positive.  I cannot help with the chlamydia blood test result:  it is not a recommended test, does not reliably diagnose active infection, and therefore we do not use it in my clinic and I have no experience with it.  IgM HSV tests are useless as well. And it is ridiculous to say they cannot test for gonorrhea unless someone has a discharge.  Modern, accurate tests for both gonorrhe and chlamydia can be done on urine.

So it seems clear that whatever provider or service you used for testing is not a reliable expert and you pretty much wasted your money on those tests.  You need to see a health care provider who will provide proper in person advice and not rely on this or any other website.

The vague urinary symptoms you describe are not typical of any STD. But it could reflect a urinary tract infection or other problem.  Or maybe nothing but anxiety over your sexual exposure.  Keep your appointment with the urologist and follow his or her advice.

Thanks for the thanks about the forum.  But please note forum rules:  maximum 2 new questions every 6 months.

I forgot to mention that I had a full urine test performed a couple of months ago during my routine annual medical and again a couple of days ago. It showed my urine to be clear, yellow and transparent in both tests and no bacterias in the first test. The second test stated that bacterias were "scarce". Everything else was fine. My PH level was 6 in both tests. The only odd thing in both my urine tests was an abundance of mucous.

To: Similar Incident
I have a similar incident.  Male to male Oral sex, no signs of any STD (no discharge or pain urinating) but I have had sore testicles for about 5 days now.  It sounds like epididmytis (from what I have read).  Could it be from an STD?  I was tested 3 months ago for all STDs and all negative.  Have had a couple of Male to male oral since test.  Will an std clinic test for epidiymitis from STD??

Doc, thanks for your reply, although it was a little discouraging. Please note that my sexual contact was on March 25th and the tests were run some 3 weeks later, not one week later as you indicated. Also, I do not live in the U.S. and I quess the testing is not the same. I asked for urine tests for gonarrhea and chlamydia but was told that they don't do them. The tests I took are the ony ones availabe. Why would they do them if they are "useless" ? They must give some kind of guideline to STD's !! It is now over one month after my risky exposure. I have not had any discharge from the penis, nor typical signs of herpes. The only problem I have is this urge to urinate all the time, which I hope is not related to my risky encounter. Any encouraging words you can provide would be appreciated.

One last comment. If my urine tests showed very little bacteria content, wouldn't this be a good sign that I do not have any bacterial STD ?
