Ear drainage and severe headache?

10 yr old, Dx: Left ear infection. Tx:ATBs and drops. Next day, increase in pain @ BOTH ears, added Tyl #3. 4 days, after beginning ATBs, bloody drainage from one ear, and SEVERE HEADACHE and eye pressure? Is this common... rupture? Maybe something totally different? Anybody think we need to see ENT or continue with FP?

Get to a pediatric ent if possible.  Or just any ent.  The bilateral ear pain and drainage really needs to be checked out. These days doctors are using ear drops either with or without oral antibiotics.  They will sometimes drain ear with suction to get all of the "stuff" out and get a good look into ear canal.  They may do a swab to determine if staph or other type of infection so they can treat it correctly.

Yes you sure do need to get to an ENT for a look see. The 2nd
earache after the anti's started is very strange. Is the dark
discharge from the 1st ear attack, & are you sure it's blood?
Sometimes it's liguified particles w/ wax. Don't probe w/
q-tip or you'll push stuff up farther. The ear canal can be ck'd for redness by you w/ a flashlight for irritation or scratching. A moistened cotton ball w/ some olive or baby oil
can soothe. Sounds like the middle ear has infection & maybe
perforated? The other ear needs to be ck'd. It's possible that
it's from eustachian tubes (in back of throat). Ck throat for
soreness/red. If not better on 3rd day of anti's it can turn
into alot of pain & sometimes fill w/ pressure to the inner-ear.
That's the part that does the hearing/vibrations causing head-
ache. Ck for fever. One ear then the next raises suspicion.
This little gal needs relief. They may culture the ear for a
stronger antibiotic. If it's viral, she'd have alot of ear pressure & meds may not be helping the bacteria. Warm moist
cloths will help w/ temple pain where the nerves are spasming
causing the headaches. 2nd thought, avoid the baby oil. It has
petroleum & will mess w/ the drops. Olive oil is natural.
Without alot of excitement, have her drink frequent & see if
she's in more pain or seems better after. When she swallows,
that tugs on the ET & pulls mid-fluid to drain dwn throat.
Maybe hot lemonade w/ honey? You're Mom & know her best. She
must feel horrible. Tugging/squishing at ears can cause more
irritation. Have her sinuses ck'd too. Maybe some baby aspirin
& lots of hugs. Gd-luck.
