Help understanding Free T4, T3 etc results

by Berlioz1, Mar 14, 2006 12:00AM
Hello I am new here so I apologise if I have incorrectly posted.

I have a LONG medical history, constipation, IBS, fibromyalgia, exhausted, gained 20lbs all on my stomach, tendonitis, chronic pain, non celiac gluten sensitivity (my Daughter is biopsy dx celiac) milk intolerant, ashtma, sinus..memory problems, cold hand and feet, low body temp all of which are consistant with low thyroid, I have just received the following tests results which all came back 'normal' but are they? my previous TSH was 2.96 2 months ago, and 1.5 2 years ago. I paid privatly for tests as my GP just gave me more Prozac!

Free T4    11.5    pmol/l    ref  (*--)    (9.14 - 23.4)

Free T3    3.5    pmol/L         (-*-)    (2.23 - 5.34)

TSH    1.42        uIU/ml        (*--)(.49 - 4.67)

Thyroid antibody profile - negative

Zinc 66 ug/dl      75-130

        10.1         11.5 -20.0

I am also looking into leaky gut test and candida as these are also linked to gluten intolerance, adrenal saliva testing and also have the same symptoms.

Do I except that my thyroid isn't the problem?

Thank you for listening,

Berlioz

I would accept that thyroid is not likely the problem.  I have a few unusual cases that on ultrasound the appearance of auto-immune disease is present even without antibodies and in those cases I have tried thyroid hormone with varying degrees of success.

Would test adrenals, further eval for celiac sprue and see an internal medicine specialist to co-ordinate the eval.

Thank you both for your input.

There is no point having celiac bloods/biopsy as I was 95% GF/wheat free due to the IBS and would get false negative results (as my DD did initially). I had stool testing and gene testing instead as a gluten challenge would have made me very ill. I have ordered the saliva and leaky gut test. I have made an appointment to see a private holistic GP at the end of the month. My siblings all have similar probelms but not the same 'official' diagnosis, tests or GPs.

I would be interested in the views of anyone else here with similar results and symptoms as I try and sort out this jigsaw!

I too have gone through so much in the last 3 years, from doctor to doctor.  Finally I gave up and went to a Naturopathic doctor and paid privately.  I have never had such comprehensive blood testing done, he tested for so much.

I have my follow up appointment to see him next week.

I rang the office and only found out the following, but I will have all info next week.  My results were

TSH - 2.34

Free T3 - 4.3

Free T4 - 12.4

He did test Thyroid antibodies but I haven't got that yet.

I just thought I'd post as mine didn't seem that different to yours.  When I saw him a couple of weeks ago, I had historical blood work photocopies that I brought along dating back to 2004, which my TSH was a little bit higher.  Even in that meeting, he took one look at the level and said that it was elevated.

Will update after the appointment what he says, so we can compare notes!

Comparing notes sounds like a great idea.  I will also post my results as I get them.
