Adrenals and Ferritin

by cats81, Aug 01, 2006 12:00AM
I was dx with Hash's in April started on Armour unable to increase due to palps and increase allergies/asthma, had anaphylaxis reaction one night after a run.  GP took me off armour and had me wait a month to do labs which read:

TSH 8.2

FT3 2.6    (2.4-4.2)

FT4 .86    (.78-2.79)

Ferritin 8  (15-200)

Cortisol am 3.5   (3-8)  pm  0.5 (0.5-1.5)

TPA 42.9  (0-2.0)

TGA 30     (0-25.0)

He started me on half 50mg levoxyl now on my fifth day.  Ive been to ER twice with blood pressure going from 150 to 100 and spiraling fainting feeling especially at night.  My asthma has increased. With my adrenals and ferritin so low could this be causing all the symptoms?  Should I be on iron replacement and cortef?  Have appointment with an endo next month but need help now. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

would do ACTH stimulation test to see if you need cortef.

correlate the low ferritin with CBC and iron panel then talk with your doc about possible iron replacement.  Low ferritin suggests low iron storage -- not uncommon in menstruating women.

Your ferritin is way too low.  I was down to 19 and flipped out, you're lower than that.  The reference ranges are way too low, in my humble opinion. You seem to have symptoms of iron deficiency anemia. Your ferritin should be minimum 40 you should work to get it up to about 70 or more.  So if I were you, I'd supplement with ferrous gluconate, or better still, see a naturopath and get a better one, that doesn't make you sick.  It might cost a bit more.  Eat more red meat /liver, if you can.  Get that iron up, because the thyroid needs iron to function properly, and the low iron may mask other important symptoms.cb
