Thyroid, Parathyroid Issues?

by jenlj1, Nov 17, 2006 12:00AM
These were run by an orthopedist oncologist I was sent to after I had yet another stress fracture that appeared "tumor-like", but was fine (3 stress fx so far w/ 5 other fxs over the past ten years) then I was sent to a endo after my DEXA scan showed a t-score of -2.0 in my hips.  I'm 31, female (5'4" 115lbs), run and play tennis regulary, good diet and otherwise extremely healthy.

The endo just started me on 25mg of hctz for what he calls a negative Ca balance(my only medication) and I actually feel worse now; no energy-I can barely get thru a 3 mile run whereas before I could run 7 miles and feel great afterwards.  I'm just tired and easily fatigued in genernal now-I've never been like this.

FT3 tracer 189 (210-440)

T3 88.1 (84-171)

T4 5.98 (no free t4 run)

TSH 1.01

Ca 10.4

24 hour urine f/ Ca--1st test 545 2nd test 260 (<250)

PTH 33.8 (11-67)

I was also told my DHEA is low (I believe 100) but not to worry about it.

To me it looks like my T3's and 4's are low and I'm lossing a lot of Ca.  My endo said I may have the beginning of hyperparathyoidism and thyroid is fine; he wasn't too concered and said to start the HCTZ.  I don't know why I'm suddenly so fatigued, if it is the medication or the thyroid or something totally differnet.  I would love to have my energy back; but more importantly build up my bone mass.  Any thoughts on my labs and insight into why I'm so tired; and is this worth looking into further?  I would hate to miss something and continue to loss bone mass if I can help it.

Thank You!

If the 10.4 Ca was before HCTZ (a med known to increase serum Ca as it decreases Urine Ca) then you may have primary HyperPTH but would like to see more testing to be conclusive.  The thyroid tests are normal - this is not likely the cause of your symptoms.  What was the Vit D level?  Is there a family history or personal history of kidney stones (ie the high urine Ca).

Get your Free T4/3 tested. Also, unbalanced estrogen/progesterone can contribute to lower bone mass, as well as hypothyroidism. Estrogen helps bone from breaking down, and progesterone helps build it up. If you truly are hypothyroid, then you probably have high estrogen, and lower progesterone, like me. They need to be balanced, which might end up becoming balanced if the thyroid is treated properly. Need to look at all possibilities for the lower bone mass, as well as other symptoms.
