Atypical FNAB

by danniah, Apr 05, 2007 12:00AM
I am currently 38 weeks pregnant. Three weeks ago I noticed swelling on the right lobe of my thyroid. My OB did an ultrasound which revealed a 2.0cm x 2.1cm cyst on the right and a 1.3 X .7cm complex mass on the left. I was referred for consultation to an endocrinologist who ordered a FNAB. I had the biopsy done this past Monday and discovered that the cyst had grown 1cm in one week. They took 4 samples from the cyst, and drained it with an 18 guage needle. They took 3 samples from the left complex mass. My PCP called with the results today. The right side was cystic material with some white cells in it. The left side, however, showed mild atypical cells. I also heard the word follicular but it was wedged in other words that I didn't quite understand. I am waiting for the endocrinologist to call but that won't be for another week or two. When you have atypical cells, does that mean that they are malignant or that they will be? Generally are the masses removed? Could my pregnancy have somehow influenced this presentation? Thank you!

If there is any question about the FNA samples, send the slides to an expert at U Florida, U Penn or Hopkins -- as local readings of 'atypical cells' often end up being very benign.  Also, check thyroid antibodies as sometimes hashimotos can be read as atypical when this is usually a benign process.
