Medullary thyroid cancer: familiar possibility and Pregnancy

by Cat31, Jun 16, 2007 12:00AM
Hi.
My father has medullar thyroid cancer (age 54). His thyroid was removed 2 months ago and he only had cancer on one side. He is fine, for know.
I'm worried because doctors are talking about familiar cancer and i'm trying to get pregnant. In the hospital the genetic consult is taking long to be schedule.
I've been read about it and i'm still no shore if i schould stop trying or if the risk is minimal and i should continue trying (i'm 31 years old.
My father has 2 older siblings (63 e 60)and my grandparents died "early" (coronary atack and ?uterus carcinoma?).

Thanks for any new view on this...

Your dad should be tested for the common genetic mutation -- RET oncogene that causes familial MTC -- but most of this is not genetic.  Also, you could have a thyroid ultrasound in the meantime.  If he is RET+ then you need to be tested.
