synthroid for normal T3 and T4? but elevated tsh

For one year I have had an elevated tsh of 6.5 to 8.0. The HMO doesn't want to any other lab work. They prescribe synthroid and that is it. I had my free T3 an T4 checked and they are at normal to high normal levels. I am slightly heat intolerant without medication I tryed cytomil and synthroid for a trail of 4-5 days and was nearly catatonic, constipated, with cold hand and feet. This seems all backwards.? I know that I feel well without the medication and ill with it. Am I ruining my long term health by not agreeing to this horrible medication?

The target TSH is about 1.0 -- would initially use synthroid alone to try to achieve this consistently -- then consider trial of cytomel, but in many cases, there is not a benefit from the cytomel.

I can sympathize. I have had my thyroid "nuked" with radioiodine due to Graves Disease and now have a very hypo thyroid. My levels are normal with synthroid, but I also have symptoms of hypo and hyperthyroidism. The hyper symptoms were the worst and I talked my doc into letting me try the next strenght down. Guess what, I tested within normal limits and felt well enough to live with it.It may be worth trying to adjust your dose.
