HI DR.MARK,I HAVE SOME QUESTIONS FOR YOU AGAIN.MY NEW DOCTOR WANTED ME TO SEE MY NEUROLOGIST,BECAUSE OF MY STROKE.HE SAID IT WAS VERY UNCOMMON FOR A WOMAN OF 33 TO HAVE A STROKE.I SAW MY NEUROLOGIST ON MONDAY.SEE IS CHECKING MY THYROID AGAIN AND MY PARATHYROID.SHE SAID SOMETHING ABOUT HYPERPARATHYROIDISM,AND CALCIUM BUILD UP,BREAKING AWAY TO MY STROKE.I HAVE SWOLLEN LYMHP NODES THEY HAVE BEEN SWOLLEN SINCE LAST YEAR,I HAVE TAKEN DIFFERENT TYPES OF ANTIBIOTICS.AMOXICILIN 1000MGS,AUGMENTIN2000MGS,AMOXICILIN 2000MGS.THEY ARE SORE TO THE TOUCH.SHE'S ALL SO CHECKING MY CHOLESTEROL AND TRIGLYCERIDES ALONG WITH OTHERS.I WAS WANTING TO KNOW IS IT POSSIBLE FOR CALCIUM DEPOSITS IN THE BLOOD TO CAUSE A STROKE?SHE IS ALL SO THINKING IT CAN STILL BE MY MY THYROID,BECAUSE OF MY HAIR LOSS,AND WEIGHT GAIN SINCE THE LAST TIME I SAW HER.MY BODY TEMPERATURE IS ALL WAYS LOW ALL SO WHEN SHE CHECKS IT.SHE SAID MY BODY TEMPERATURE IS SUPPOSE TO BE 98.6,BUT IT USUALLY RUNS BETWEEN 97.0 OR 96.8.AND I AM CONSTANTLY COLD.MY FEET SWELL AND HANDS.I JUST WANTED SOME OF YOUR ADVICE ALL SO THANKS IN ADVANCE.TNT406

Strokes can be due to calcium build-up in the arteries (atherosclerosis) but it is very unusual at your age - parathyroid problems do NOT usually do this.  Checking the parathyroid is easy with a blood test.

More common cause of stroke in a young person is a blood clotting problem.  Labs such as Factor V Leiden, Protein C & S, ANA, Lupus anticoagulants, Anti-phospholipid and Cardiolipin antibodies and others can be done to identify a condition that would lead to excess blood clotting.  An ultrasound of the heart and carotid arteries should also be done.

Thyroid needs to be regulated (keep TSH around 0.5-1.5).  The temperature of 98.6 should not be thought of as the only "normal number" - the range is 96.5-99.5 roughly based on newer publications.

The lymph nodes - if not responding to antibiotics, may need further evaluation such as biopsy.  It is unlikely (but possible) to have signiicant lymph nodes due to hashimotos.  I think you have multiple thyroid "cysts" if I recall previous postings - perhaps a biopsy of the larger or more solid areas should be considered.

Good Luck.

I read recently online tnt that low thyroid can cause heart risks/build up of cholesterol which can cause angina/narrowing of heart arteries which can lead to stroke and heart disease.  i did a search on google "thyroid and heart disease" AND it brought up lots of stuff.  my temp 1st thing in am w/out activitiy was 97.  you definately are low thyroid.  an awesome book to check out is feeling fat fuzzy and frazzled by dr shames.  i read something about nitroglicerin med for heart/angina.  how do you know you had a stroke?
