Blood in Urine When doing urine analysis

by sktec, Jul 10, 2003 12:00AM
I am a 28 years old male who for a while now (2 years)have been having microscopic blood in urine plus a slight burning sensation intermitent while urinating. I have seen a couple of urologists , one did all STD tests and kindey's examintation and told me that the blood is not an issue, recently I went to see other urologists as it seems I am having more recurring symptoms, of which is that I am having pain in my penis if I press on it after urinating  also sometimes after ejaculating and ejaculation is not very comfortable as it used to be. Also my erections sometimes are slightly painful. The pain while urinating is most obvious when I am moving the bowel , some how that pressures me and I feel the burning sensation. Recently I realized that I am going 5 times a day to urinate and the amount of urine is not that big (not more than 100-150 ml) Also it is very difficult now to get a second erection after ejaculation.  The new urologist I am seeing suggested I have prostatitis and have been giving me antibiotics for almost a month now with no improvment. Still I have blood in urine whenver I do urine analysis , still I have the burning  sensation while urinating (intermitent), and the slight discomfort at ejaculation. Are these symptoms really prostatitis symptoms or my urologist has a worng guess? I am really getting worried since it doesn't seem I have an infection (2-4 pus cells in urine analysis) and white blood cells are normal only bloob in urine and my semen analysis was fine. I drink a lot of water and my kidneys ultrasound (did 2 times ) was fine. What might be going wrong here?

Hello - thanks for asking your question.

There are several causes fo blood in the urine.  They can range from infection to kidney/bladder diseases to prostate diseases.

You have been tested for STDs, had a kidney ultrasound performed, and treated for prostatitis.

I would inquire about a cystoscopy.  This is a scope that can evaluate for any lesions in the urinary tract and bladder.  In addition to the cystoscopy, urine tests for cytology should also be considered to evaluate for cancer.

If the bladder evaluation is negative, then further testing on prostatitis - including a transrectal ultrasound and prostatic massage for prostate secretions - can be considered.

If all the tests are negative, then periodic screening with urine cytology and/or cystoscopy can be considered.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
