Complications from colon surgery

by Alakai, Aug 27, 2003 12:00AM
In April I had surgery for colon cancer. I had about 6 inches removed starting from the upper part on my rectum to my Sigmoid colon. One complication from the surgery was that I had trouble urinating. I had to rely on a Foley catheter. The catheter was removed several times over my 2 months stay at the hospital but always had to be reinserted. I finally was free from the catheter after I was released from the hospital. I urinate OK now but I have another side effect from the surgery that maybe you can help me with.

My sexual function is not the same as it was before the surgery. I do not get as firm as I did before. I also have no actual ejaculation although I do have the sensation of ejaculation. Finally, after sexual relations, the head becomes very sensitive (almost ticklish) and I have to stop contact.

My prostate should be intact and normal so I don’t understand why I should be having the problems I am having now. The surgeon told me it was nerves and I should go back to normal but it has been over 4 months since my surgery.

Do you have any idea of what could be causing this situation?

This is known as neurogenic bladder.  It can certainly be a side effect from the surgery that you had 4 months ago.  However, there may be other considerations as well.  Neurologic damage can also cause trouble urinating.

Here are some tests that you may want to discuss with your urologist:

- x-rays of the skull and spine

- electroencephalogram (EEG) - a procedure that records the brain's continuous, electrical activity by means of electrodes attached to the scalp

- imaging tests of the bladder and ureters

- tests that involve filling the bladder (to see how much it can hold and checking to see if the bladder empties completely)

Regarding the sexual function - this can also be from the surgery, or nerve damage.  Again, a urological referral would be the most reasonable approach at this time.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
