Recurring Leiomyoma Tumor of the Bladder

by LINDA J, Dec 29, 2003 12:00AM
In March of 2003, I had a sizeable benign tumor removed from my bladder and several fibroids removed from my uterus.  During my routine followup appt. with my urologist, another leiomyoma was found and will also be removed within the next month. I realize since I am a two time cancer survivor, ( Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 1977 and Breast Cancer in  2001), that nothing is left in me that is questionable, however I also have been told that these benign tumors could be originating in my uterus.  If this is possible, wouldn't it be better to remove my uterus?  I am 45 years old and have already experienced full menopause.  In addition the above mentioned cancers, I have had a broken hip in 2001( from chemotherapy), arthroscopic shoulder surgery caused from using a cane, and the bladder/fibroid surgery.  I am also an insulin diabetic & have developed lymphodema in my left arm where they removed lymph nodes during my breast surgery.  This makes it additionally difficult when they need to find a vein for bloodwork or an IV.  In my case, would you suggest a hysterectomy or as my Dr. suggests, another bladder surgery?  Is there a limit to the number of times this type of surgery can be performed before bladder function is compromised?  Is there a chance this type of tumor can return a third time?

Thank you for your time.  Linda J

You can consider an ultrasound of the uterus first to confirm if in fact there are leiomyomas there first before considering surgery.  If present, then removal of the leiomyomas itself, or removal of the whole uterus can be considered.

If there is no tumor present in the uterus, it does not make sense to remove it (as it presents another surgery).  If there only tumor present in the bladder, then I would go there first.

As I am not a urologist, I am not aware of a limit to the number of times bladder surgery can be performed.  This particular questions should be addressed by your personal physician before surgery.

To answer the final question, yes - there will always be a chance of tumor recurrance.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
