Diff. between cyst and cancer

Hi. I am an 18 year old male. I can honestly say that I am extremely terrified of having cancer. After researching online, I have one important question and that is: what is the diff. between a cyst and cancer? This is my situation.... I dont really remember waking up one morning and finding something in my testicular area....I just remember realizing a while ago that there was something strange. What I basically have is something on my left testicle - it basically feels like a collection of veins - not solid and not fluid....sort of like in between. At times it seems like fluid...when i test myself while laying down....However when Im standing up it feels more solid. At first I thought it was nothing dangerous but then I began to worry and started checking it out online by searching for 'symptoms of prostate cancer' which I thought was the same....none of these symptoms were like mine so I felt pretty relieved. However, when I started randomly hearing the term 'testicular cancer' I realized that might be what I had to research. After doing so, I realized that unfortuantely what I had was similar to the symptoms - only in appearance though. I have no pain or difference in urination, ejaculation etc. After reading some of the messages on the boards, many people were told that they had cysts, as opposed to cancer, which could easily be removed. My question is: Before heading to a doctor, I would like to know the difference between a cyst's appearance and feeling and that of testicular cancer? Please reply asap as I am extremely terrified and am too afraid at this point to mention anything to my family..... Thank you.

Testicular cancer is normally firm and non-tender. It does not transilluminate (i.e. light does not go through it when a light is pressed against the scrotum).
There are a variety of scrotal cysts that can be present. In general, they are benign and do not progress to cancer.
Another consideration would be a varicocele - which is a collection of dilated veins - certainly possible given your description.
In any case, the test to put your mind at ease would be a scrotal ultrasound. This can evaluate for most the diseases described above and should be easily ordered by your personal physician.
Followup with your personal physician is essential.
