Frequent Urination

by Promontory, Nov 20, 2004 12:00AM
Hello, I am a 19-year old male who has been having problems w/ frequent urination for over a year.  I am currently urinating over ten times a day.  It almost always feels like I have a slight urge to urinate, even immediately after voiding.  The slight urge to urinate seems to be coming from the penis, rather than the bladder.  It is ocassionally difficult to start urination and the amount of urine seems to be less than optimal in most cases.  The urine appears normal and the force of the stream seems normal.  There isn't any pain involved.  I normally do not have to get up at night to urinate and my first void of the morning typically feels better than the rest.  I am drinking a normal amount of liquids, mostly water or fruit juice.  I have recently visited a urologist and had the following conditions ruled out after examination and tests: Diabetes, UTI/STD and Enlarged Prostate.  They also did an ultrasound on my bladder after voiding and I was found to have a normal amount of urine remaining (54 CC).  He prescribed to me Ditropan XL and advised me to take 10 mg/a day.  After three days of usage, I seem to notice almost no improvement.  I am otherwise in good health and wondering what may be causing this.  Thankyou for your time.

Most of the common causes (i.e. infection, enlarged prostate, diabetes mellitus) have already been ruled out by your urologist.  Diabetes mellitus has likely been ruled out (i.e. an elevated sugar level).

There is another type of unrelated diabetes, known as diabetes insipidus that is more uncommon.  These set of diseases are caused by insufficient production, or resistance to ADH (a hormone known as a anti-diuretic hormone).

What's known as a water restriction test should be considered to evaluate for this disease.  A referral to an endocrinologist should be discussed for consideration of this test.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
