Are there any medical connection between kidney disease and depression?

Can any chemical or hormonal imbalance due to some kind of kidney malfunction cause depression?

There is a possible association between kidney disease and depression according to some small studies.

However, I am not aware of a chemical or hormonal imbalance (i.e. modulations in serotonin levels) from kidney disease that can specifically lead to depression.
