Quitting the Cigs

by Fiona McCabe, Jan 12, 2000 12:00AM
My father has been trying for years to give up smoking, using the whole range of patches, gum, self-help books, the whole lot. The one approach he hasn't tried (and won't, because he doesn't believe it works) is just to stop completely, with no aids whatsoever, and no gradual "cutting-down". I know this has worked for friends of mine in the past, but is there any evidence that this is the best way to do it? Or can you recommend something else?

Thanks,

Fiona

Fiona,

My grandmother quit smoking "cold turkey" a couple of years ago.  It lasted a few months now she is smoking as much if not more than before she quit.  Also, I know that is the case with several other people I know.  So maybe your father should cut down gradually.
