Vicodan Addiction Concern

by Mike, Mar 08, 2000 12:00AM
I have just been informed that my brother has a SEVERE addiction to this drug.  I am told he is ingesting between 25-30 10mg. of Vicodan per day.  I am also told that he feels he can clean himself up by reducing his intake daily.  I know this is not possible.  I believe he will have other health related concerns, ie. liver/stomach damage.  I don't think he will go into rehab on his own, so any & all advise you can give me to take to him to open his eyes & help save his life, will be greatly appreciated.  PLEASE GET BACK TO ASAP, as I need to get him help!

Thank you,

Mike

This is a more common problem than you think.  I am being tapered off this medication and am doing well, however, if he is using this medication at such a high dose, he really needs to check himself in to a rehab.  The withdrawals alone are terrible, they also can give him medication to help tolerate the symptoms.  He will need all the support you can give to him, however, he must be ready to stop himself.

God bless

Teri

Mike, I am dealing with a very similar concern.  What were your warning signs?  Did he admit the addiction or was he "found out".  My brother went into rehab for this drug about four years ago and we believe he is back into it.  Whatever information you have would be appreciated.  What are the signs of the drug?  THANKS.

Mike, it is possible but very difficult to wean oneself off such a large amount of hydrocodone.  I have done it but it took every ounce of willpower I had.  I did a gradual taper of the medication, going down about 5% per day.  If you or someone else controls the meds it is easier than if your brother tries to do it (because the temptation is to cheat).  He may well need a professional detox if he can't taper.  You are correct that if he continues to use so much aceteminophen (he is above toxic levels) he can and will likely cause damage to his liver.  I would suggest he start taking milk thistle, which has been shown in several studies to help protect and even heal liver damage.  (You can buy it anywhere they sell vitamins).

Be there to support your brother, and ask him to read this forum.  Seeing how many others there are like him may help him to want to stop.  Also, if he reads this I hope he realizes the longer he goes on, the harder it is to keep getting enough painkillers, meaning he will either start forging, shopping doctors, etc.  Eventually there won't be enough pills and he will hit rock bottom.  Better to stop now before that happens.

With respect to how you can tell if someone is on painkillers, the best way is to look at their pupils.  The pupils will be constricted (very small), even in low light.  Best of luck to you.

Thanks to Teri, Kate & Brian,

We have had an intervention with my brother today.  He was not very happy about it at first.  He stated he had already planned to stop.  We have set up a plan to slowly reduce his dosage. He is going to start at 7 tablets/4x day for a week, then 6-4x/day @week going to 4-4x/day @week and so on.  He has refused to voluntary commitment to detox, but has "promised" that if he strays from this plan that he will go for professional help.  I hope, but don't think he will do it on his own, but the family & his friends will support & help him to try.

As for telltale symptoms, he is actually pretty normal in his day to day actions, so Kate, take Brians advise & look into your brothers eyes.  That is the one thing I noticed about my brother. Good Luck.

Glad to hear he is agreeing to taper off the drugs.  I hope he follows through.  The way to tell if he has is if he becomes irritable and somewhat depressed at the end of the taper.  If he seems totally normal and happy, he's probably still using.  Also, IMHO it would be easier to step down by 1/2 tab every four hours for 3 days, then another half in 3 days, and so on.  That way he's tapering a bit more gradually and feels like he's making progress more (every 3 days rather than once a week).  Just my opinion for whatever its worth.  Hope all goes well and keep us posted.

Thanks for your advise.  I will pass it on to him.  I spoke with him again last night & he really seems to want to get this thing done....

I got addicted to vicodin ES ( 7.5 ) for migraines.

After five years of trying to quit and I could not,

I went on methadone, the average daily dose is 65 mg

I started on 15 and am now on 11.  I know it sounds

heavy but at least he can get himself together and come off

slowly

TO JAY:

Regarding the methadone.  I went to a meth clinic on Monday this week. I'm taking 8-10 vicodin a day.  The didn't actually REFUSE me, but said that since I'm in cronic pain, they didn't feel the methadone would help since once I've detoxed, it's a catch 22 because of the pain.  It took me 4 weeks to finally get the nerve to go there and now I'm turned down.  How is it with the meth? Does it really help the withdrawl?  I'm sure if I go back and tell them I want it badly enough, they'll help me.  But I'm a little scared of meth on the other hand.  Let me know please..

Thanks, Judy.
