Anyone have info on the drug Amitriptyline?

My doctor gave me Amitriptyline  to help me through my depression spells.  I wanted to know if anyone has had any personal expierences with this medication?   I looked up some info online but not really the info I'm looking for....I wanted to know the main side effects and  if it's addictive or not?  Any info is appreciated.

I took it in the form of Elavil at one time.  I took it only at night, and it was really helpful for sleeping.  It was prescribed to me to help with my pain at night.  



I didn't have any side effects other than drowsiness for the first week or so.  After that, my body got used to it.  I was on a very low dose of 10 mg. at bedtime.



Everyone responds to medications differently, but when I stopped it, I had diarrhea for days.  I am not sure if it was coincidental or not?

Amiltriptyline is in a class of drugs called tricycilic antidepressants.  They have been around for over 40 years.  It is not addicting.  The main side effects are sleepiness, dry mouth and constipation.  It is sometimes be prescibed for insomnia or fibromyalgia. Your doctor must have a reason for prescribing this drug since there are many "cleaner" antidepressants on the market today.  Most doctors prefer the newer antidepressant medications like paxil and prozac because of fewer side effects.

Could this be a good alternative for me? I asked my doctor about antidepressants .... but he said to stay on the ultram. I know it wouldn't mix with ultram, so I'd have to be completely clear.

It would be nice to use one medication to cover pain and sleep.

I'm trying to keep an open mind and not jump into anything. How are you doing with pain these days? Does the Bupreno take care of pain? It sounds like a miracle ....

Thank you all fr responding.  It was given to me for depression and so I can sleep @ night.  I guess thts why he prescribed it to me.   I was going to call him tomorrow and asked about it.  I figured he knew what he was doing. LOL    Thanks again for the info!

Hey Kell,

I was given that stuff years back to help me find sleep..... all it gave me was the worst "tin" flavoured, dry mouth possible; and it's sedating qualities were poor(FOR ME). I found jamming a bunch of turkey home(for the tryptophan) knocked me out much quicker; but its a lit'l difficult eating that evrynight!! Never touched it again.

Anyways hope you and yours are well, and same to you, have a Great Christmas!!!

My vet prescribed the exact same medicine (10mg. 1xper day) for my kitty kat for anti-anxiety.   Poor thing, she hides under my bed all day long and is so tightly wound up we cant pet her and she bites and hisses at us all the time.  Apparently amatriptaline is a med for both humans and animals.  Interesting.

My mom has been on and off Elavil for 20 years.  She swears by it,  It helps her sleep at night.  At one point, they had her Paxil and she had awful awful withdrawal from the Paxil.  Elavil has been so helpful for her.   There is my 2 cents =)

I was given Amitriptyline (spellin) by a doctor about 10 yrs ago. The doctor told me that he did not want to get me hooked on pain pills and that this drug has been used for people with long term pain... I gave it a shot but it I could not stand the side effects. I was in a fog so bad that I almost cut off my own finger while sharping one of my hunting knifes and I didnt feel a thing!! I had to go off of the meds after a short time. About five years ago the doctor gave my wife this drug for depression. She has had no adverse side effects and claims that it has helped her a great deal. Must be the person and the dosage. Even though my wife was helped by the drug and I was not.. neither she nor I had any kind of addiction or withdrawl from the drug.

please see areal pyshchiatrist - this is elavil a old anti-dperession med there are new drugs to address your issues- not even close for pain

I have been diagnosed with depression and panic anxiety and have been on Amitriptyline for about two years now I think.  It helps me to sleep and my doc gave it to me so I can sleep and to help with my depression.  I am also on EffexorXR and clonazepam and all together they are what works for me.  I believe other than making you tired the first couple of weeks there aren't many side effects.  It has helped me tremendously!  I can't tell you how good it is to sleep again....well now you probably know. :)  HOpe this helps and you feel better soon.  It takes a while before Amitriptyline gives you the full effects. I found lots of info online and at the library...I am new here so feel free to message me if you have any more questions...not an expert or anything.  :)
