My 40 year old wife was diagnosed last year with MVP and ventricular
tachycardia. She takes metroprolol (50 mg?) to control the symptoms.
She complains of fatigue and weight gain (probably 30 pounds).
They did the cardiac catheter stimulation to determine the area of the problem.
We believe that she had been hyperthyroid in the past, but her levels were high-normal when tested.

My questions are:

1.Are there any drugs with less side effects?

2. Are there long term concerns for either her condition or
long term use of Metroprolol?

3. What drugs must she avoid (we know about caffeine and stimulants, but what about cold remedies,
allergy drugs, pain relievers, etc.)?

4. Is ablation a better option?

5. We had a friend who nearly died after becoming pregnant in this condition. Is this a problem?
She would like to have a baby (our first). What about after ablation?

Are there any other suggestions on how to live with this condition (warm climate, avoid physical labor, what to do about exercise, etc)?

Thank you for any assistance.

Dear Kurt

1.There are other drugs for ventricular tachycardia, but they all have more side effects.

2. Long-term metoprolol is safe. If you are correct and she has ventricular tachycardia, this is of great concern, in both the long and short term.

3. I would avoid over-the-counter cold remedies, as these often have stimulants in them.

4. If her tachycardia can be ablated, this is often the best option.

5. After a successful ablation would probably be safer.

I hope this has been useful. Feel free to write back with further questions. Good luck.
